strangebrew Posted December 22, 2007 I felt like doing something different last night so I tried a poppy seed wash tea. Roughly 300gms was used, 1/2 were the white & bluish seeds that come in the Menora brand packets and the other was a GFresh container which contained darker seeds. All the product was Australian. About 1/2 an hour after consuming the tea I definately felt something, a bit like having 1 or 2 drinks. I thought to myself "yeah times that by 3 and it'd be OK" so I did another wash and had that but didn't really notice much of an increase in effect. Well about 2-3 hours in I started feeling overheated and flushed and itchy and I suspected an allergic reaction was starting. Went to the bathroom, lifted my arms and yep sure enough the welts were starting, also there was some stomach discomfort with a bloated feeling. My face was red and eyes bloodshot and my ears were on fire so I jumped in a cold shower as it always seems to help. After a hour or two the symptoms had passed and I went to bed but then my bloated gut ache started up again really bad so I had to have some aspirin. But finally after about 4-5 hours of swearing I'd never do it again, I think I finally found that warm yummy space that people can get hooked on - there was a really nice feeling of being "comfortably numb" right up until morning and a wonderful sleep was had -whenever I woke up in the night that cozy, coccooned feeling was right there with me. P.S. Turns out the histamine reaction to opiates is not unknown, so maybe I'm not allergic but there are people who are allergic to poppy seeds, so anyone thinking of trying this should be aware. The gastic trouble and bloating seem to lean more towards a delayed allergic reaction though but I can eat poppy seed bagels and nuts and all that stuff so I don't know. Conan Troutman Posted December 22, 2007 (edited) If you have allergies to things such as nuts, then best bet is to stay away from seeds... but in your case doesnt sound like a reaction as such, just a big histamine release, I guess you didnt have an antihistamine on hand?? NOTE many will also cause greater CNS depression, especially 2nd generation antihistamines such as Promethazine, diphenhydramine, doxlyamine ect.. for most the itching is one of the first side effects to disappear along with the GI upset. I'll start this off without any wordsI got so high that I scratched 'till I bled I love myself better than you I know it's wrong so what should I do? The finest day that I ever had Was when I learned to cry on command I love myself better than you I know it's wrong so what should I do? I'm on a plain I can't complain I'm on a plain Edited December 22, 2007 by Conan Troutman

John_Barleycorn Posted February 9, 2008 many will also cause greater CNS depression, especially 2nd generation antihistamines such as Promethazine, diphenhydramine, doxlyamine ect.. for most the itching is one of the first side effects to disappear along with the GI upset. Just for the record, my test monkey managed to spin himself out a while back after taking a third-generation, non-drowsy histamine (Claramax) 6 hrs in. Now before anyone starts drooling about potentiation, it wasn't pleasant: monkey went from alert to fatigued, and also developed a splitting headache espite all the analgesia. Histamine taken at 0 hrs, however, seems to be OK.
strangebrew Posted February 19, 2008 What I really don't get, if indeed that was an allergic reaction that occurred, is that I've had a grand total of 3 allergic reactions in my life with symptoms similar to above. Twice I am certain it was due to beer which I never usually have a problem with. The only common factor in all cases was that they were experienced in humid conditions that I was not acclimatised to. John_Barleycorn Posted February 24, 2008 Check out what Wikipedia has to say about papaverine. It is a vasodilator (hence the flushed face, bloodshot eyes, and occasional Viagra-like effects), can also cause allergic reactions, thins the blood, and, potentially nasty, may cause liver damage, ie, hepatitis. Not completely sure of the accuracy of that last point, nor how relevant it is to someone not taking a concentrated extract. Anti-histamines combat papaverine to some extent because these tend to be vasoconstrictors, apart from anything to do with allergies (I said histamine in a previous post where I really meant anti-histamine)! Another thing to bear in mind with opiates more generally, as I think Anodyne has mentioned previously, is that there are loads of reports of hearing, balance and numbness/pins and needles problems on the somni forum, despite the fact that medical opinion seems to have nothing to say about these symptoms. OTOH, the hearing problems at least could be a symptom of paracetamol poisoning from those who do prescription chems.
