Interesting stuff! I've got a few kinds of this stuff popped up all over my beds, occasionally in pots.. the A. spinosus despite being a painful SOB to try and root out (those little spines go right down and slightly below the root crown level, nasty!) has caught my eye for a while now... all I could find on it was use as a diuretic and stone breaker etc... I might give it a blast over the next week or so and report back.

That said, are there ANY plants NOT used as mild hallucinagens in South America? :P

good work.

particularly interested in caudatus and spinosa and celosia, hell they are all interesting

my friend Rainer Bussman has done some field work with douglkas sharon and they wrote a paper about the medicinal plants of equador and i recall reading about one these plants being used spiritually to remove dano and mal aire.

i forget which one i think it may be spinosa.

i will have to check ti out again has been a while.

Interesting work! I would not have thought caudatus would be that active, thats almost like finding out barley is psychoactive

Keep us up on any developments :)

Have you tried anything with Amaranthus albus? It was used in a herb mix smoked to dispel 'lewdness' during the Navajo MAH-IH coyote chant ceremony. I havent a clue if its psychoactive but if several closely related species are... might be worth a shot.

But Auxin, barley is psychoactive! It just takes a little more work. First you must let it begin to germinate for a few days, then you dry it out just as it puts out roots. After this, it is crushed and placed in 150 deg F water for a half hour or so. After boiling and cooling, a secret potion is added and allowed to work for a week or more. The resulting fluid is strongly psychoactive

Sorry for the smart ass response; sometimes I can't help myself :innocent_n: Anyway, fascinating stuff t st! Hebrew, I too have always wondered about Celosia sp. because of their nuggety shape and fluorescent colors....hmmm....

EDIT: Oh, and Auxin, why in the hell would someone want to dispel 'lewdness'?

EDIT: Oh, and Auxin, why in the hell would someone want to dispel 'lewdness'?
Its smoked during a religious ceremony, not a bachelor party! For a visual, most people would think it inappropriate for someone to go to church, go up to take communion, look at a womans breasts, and say 'HOOOOOOO BABY! Those jugs must have whole milk!!' :drool2:

Y'know FM, at certain stages of the germing process barley is a source of hordenine too ;)

Just to be the smartarses smartarse :P

I have a few nice mature A.spinosa plants drying, shouldn't be too long before a wee toke report! Like most of my reports, it will be biased by the fact I found YET ANOTHER TICK lodged into my shoulder last night... hours of delirious boredom and brug later, it's still no fun - remember the aerogard and avagoodweekend!

I found a reference to Amaranth spinosus, the roots of this plant reputedly containing constituents that are hallucinogenic when smoked.

as promised, I spinosa'd myself with freshly gathered material from my veggie garden... nice and rich, lots of poo n good bugs etc.. I pulled a two foot plant (ouch ouch and ouch again) with maybe a 6 inch root under it, plus hairs etc... tapped the dirt off, no washing in case its a fungal thing we're really after (no signs of myc on it though). Air dried til snappable, then fine chopped and a quick forced warm air blast to crisp it up a lil. Hit about 8 cones in a row, the last 4 with a touch of tobacco to aid the burning.

taste - rooty. Carroty sawdust? Sweet towards the end, not too harsh or plastic-ey.

smell - ditto

burning - as expected

all the above aren't actually too dif from smoking wattle inner bark, nice n red n stringy... very feint styrene tang but nothing scary.

initial settling in sensation similar to a couple quick cones... before they get you stoned, when you just have Big Puffy Head and Bulging Eyeball syndrome... this fades reasonably quickly.

effects - iffy. Slight tropane-like headache, but not quite. Almost an adrenal tingle, but not quite. Nearly itchy, but not quite. Pissed quite a lot, interesting given the plant is used to treat bladder problems traditionally apparently. The usual low range is it or isnt it stuff of slight tracers, greylings at edge of vision, the odd whisper from afar... but then all those pop up if i pay the right attn. anyway. I feel chirpier and sparkier, focussed but on nothing much... kinda calamus-like, or too much tea, or something. eyes closed, there is the expectation of presnce, but no presence as yet. Might be useful with meditation or similar. No hypnagogic imagery but yknow that sensation of "yes, but there should be...". Its like looking at a tv that you think is turned off, only to realise it is on, its just showing a black screen of null signal.

Might have some potential if blended with something a bit more influential... striking me more as an opener of gates than a leader along pathways.

I'll rip n try double sometime, as it is I could smoke some more, but dont feel I need to, but then I dont feel like itd hurt either... my subtle little copilot that tells me if something is worth a longer look at a later date says yes though.

THus far, I'd give it a 5/10. Probably on par with some sages, or just enough green to flick the switch without things getting messy.

Watch the prickles if you pull your own (hahah he said pull) the lowest set is usually a good inch below soil level, sneaky!

Has anyone trialed Amaranthus cruentus yet? Any additional work on the others?

And remember folk, its advised to not fertilize these plants due to the possibility of them accumulating toxic nitrates.

Very, very interesting guys...

Could anybody comment of the effects of adding this plant to Ayahuasca?

Any plant in particular, Teotz?

Had another couple cracks at A. spinosa, nearly nada via pyro. Slight possible rapidly fading dreaminess similar to an interesting geranium a mate had a while ago. Very dry, woody taste, no tang or tingle. None of the tang of some random cyperus roots that I had a fiddle with, none of which did a whole lot either.

Any chance these remarkable effects have something to do with a shamanic tendency to pack your living space corner to corner with ageing, curing, fermenting plant materials that hang out transmitting smells, mould, weird vibes? So maybe they make a good thing to grow goodies on,once you have that knack/a tribal tradition that does the same thing... but can't be particularly relied on for goodies themselves, and theres something in the processing or local soil life, etc, that isn't so apparent from "all the way over here". My cat was big on eating ants and rubbing his nose in black mouldy patches in the lawn but didn't have much interest in the lawn itself. Should I try dropping spinosa seed into mouldy patches of couch? :P

Currently drying some roots picked from winter-drying humus rich soil, and older plants at that. Previous attempts on younger, drier/sandier grown plants taken at a much hotter time of year. Currently drying stuff picked from under T. corymbosa vine and the root should be dry about the time the T. pods are drying off.

Vague thought that benifungals might a> breed up faster in more humically blessed soils b> may migrate from other plants from similar biospheres that may or may not rely on a similar mechanism or resident population of interesting lil critters c> as the current green patch dries out over winter in time for seeds to ripen up, maybe things tend to migrate to the last available sources of moisture and sugars.

Will have a fiddle with aerial parts n seeds later on sometime, pops up here there n everywhere round here.

The benzo like constituents in spinosa are in the root apparently, so probably best brewed rather than smoked.

few months back i visited my friends at izwoz.kt had been shopping a few weeks previous and had purchased a iresine she was attracted too.i was offered a branch which rooted very easily in a little water on a window sill.

about a square cm was smoked[dried] in a cigarette with tobacco.

thought i could taste the pink?

effects similar to what vert has said.

something like a presence or a layer over things.

i'd decided before injesting to have it then lie down 4 a nap.

seemed to be light visuals, slept very well.

awoke maybe 5 hours later still a bit effected.

decided to test theory that entheogen is needed to bring out the most with this.

small dose seemed to have potentiated effects though character was heavily influenced.

seemed to last looong time, feeling would have been heavily visual if dosed earlier, very bright.hard to define mood.

change felt about 10hours from iresine injestion, mind clearer.

still effected this morning,a bit, contrary brain states of clearness and foggyness.foggyness is usual 4 me but think there is some iresine hang on too.

2 notes i'd like 2 make but dont want to influence others experience.

foggyness turned out to be some recurrent sinus stuff......basically have felt a bit renewed and clearer mentally.

did feel the need 4 choline, maybe vert was right about tropane like effects.

might be worth trying in dark silence....maybe with a jet lighter?

dark silence produced no advantage.there seemed a flickering movement like from a fire in the visual field.

plant maoi addition seemed like twice a similar thing, little visual, nice thinking.

a little entheo produced visuals beyond usual expectation, quite bright.

1/2 square inch iresine was still active but not as pronounced as double that.

again visuals from usually subvisual dose of mix.

brightness even with faint visuals.

definitely seems at least 24hrs to fully return to baseline.

fell asleep and had an intense, 4 me,dream that i was at a future ethnobotanica with a gf i dont have!

Any ideas on whether caudatus and spinosa can knock each other up? found some very strange lil specimens that could only be described as such, for now... almost whorled leaves, trying to fit those big flappy LLB margins into these tiny lil diamonds, haha, mootants ya have to love them.

Anyways, was investigating for root development when I found a couple growing, healthy specimens that seemed to have a tiny array of fruiting bodies, tiny smokey hair like things, growing from the root crown or just below, to the first set of leaves. A smell taste of this stuff between finger n thumb has a slight iodine like tang. Didn't seem to be affected growth wise, and it wasn't just some outbreak of rot as I don't get them in that area at all... bulk airflow, good temp range, not too wet, etc.

A quick check of other things and others of the same genus in the same area showed nothing.

Thought it belonged here , anyone seen this stuff on similar suspects elsewhere?
