strangebrew Posted November 14, 2007 I'll put my hand up for pollen off the 1st if you can manage it thanks man. Might be able to get a X with something similar. Close up of the 5th would be appreciated too, that one's sweet! Or is that 6?
PD. Posted November 14, 2007 PD, i believe they are all trichocereus , anyone that can ID them is welcome to try. I have a fairly good idea for some and i do know what a few are but i would like to hear a few opinions from some of the more knowlegeable folk first. Just for fun. SB, 5 and 6 are the same plant. i have posted pics of the same plant before long ago in the ID section i think. and here it is at home with new growth, looks alot different. Has up to 9 ribs. PD. Posted November 14, 2007 I guess that last pic goes to show that trich ID is pretty much useless when tryin to ID home grown plants compared to original descriptions of wild plants in their habitat.
strangebrew Posted November 14, 2007 For what it's worth - 1 - macrogonus 2 - terscheckii 4 - pachanoi 5,6 - peruvianus PS - Ferret I take it from your signature that you're voting liberal then.
PD. Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) I agree with ya on number 2 and 6 SB, here is a coupla different shots of number 4 for you to ponder. you forgot about poor number 7, i know there isnt much to see behind those bloody big flowers though. Edited November 15, 2007 by Passive Daemon
strangebrew Posted November 15, 2007 Yar that's not pachanoi, most of what you find in Oz, especially in these older outback gardens is not easy to ID.
M S Smith Posted November 15, 2007 Fantastic! The only disappointment for me is that the photos are too small. 1) T. peruvianus 2) T. terscheckii 3) T. candicans/psuedocandicans? 4) I'd lean towards a hybrid between the "PC" T. pachanoi and maybe a classic T. peruvianus. 5&6) Another likely hybrid, maybe an Ecuador/Peru T. pachanoi with T. peruvianus (which places it in what I would consider the T. macrogonus area). 7&8) My first thought was T. peruvianus, but it sort of has a weird T. bridgesii vibe about it, so I'll go with T. bridgesii, but who really knows, maybe a hybrid? But all just guesses really. Now I seriously want to find out who the main parties were who brought these Trichocereus over to Australia. I also wonder if they kept any sort of records regarding collection locations as well as if there were any intentional crosses or if the seed of any unintentional crosses was sown. So many questions. Things always seem to just get odd down there don't they? Thanks for the photos Passive, and if you're game for putting up larger ones.... ~Michael~
PD. Posted November 15, 2007 Number 1 is a strange one indeed, can look completely different depending on what part of the plant you take the pic. Apparently it blows everything else out of the water potency wise. I will be rushing back to try get pollen from it for sure. Number 2 and 3 are the same plant, flower pic is just a lil lower on the plant. Number 7 does have alot of bridge qualities about it for sure, then again so does number 4, its just not as distint and it is VERY hard to id cactus from pictures afaic. Both are hybrids. Number 5 reminds me alot of THIS from trucha, hope ya dont mind trucha To start looking for info about the origins of these plants and others it would prolly be best to start in South Australia, that is where this collection was originally sourced although some hybrid plants have since been grown by the owner as far as i know. The hybrids he has grown recently were just from random fruit, the pollinator of which is unknown. There is one very old garden i am yet to make the trek to where im sure i could find out a bit more info regarding regions of collection, when taken and by whom. It is a bit of trek like i said but im sure ill get there this summer some time. .......... as for larger pics, dial up sorry mate. I know you to are shackled by this restraint so im sure youll understand.

strangebrew Posted November 15, 2007 Number 2 and 3 are the same plant, flower pic is just a lil lower on the plant. It's odd for a pure terscheckii to be clumping like that isn't it?

PD. Posted November 15, 2007 It's odd for a pure terscheckii to be clumping like that isn't it? No idea, there are many plants there that would be classed terscheckii, impossible to tell if pure or not. They just fit into the said category.
M S Smith Posted November 15, 2007 I'm with strangebrew on the clumping "T. terscheckii." The reason I said the one photo looked like a T. candicans/pseudocandicans was both for the clumping and the low looking nature of the plant (you can see the ground in the background). So at what height are the flowers in the second photo? ~Michael~
PD. Posted November 15, 2007 OK, i went thru alot of pics and finally found it. here is a better shot of the plant taken mid 2006. As you can see its puppin like mad from the base. I tried to make these pics a little larger
M S Smith Posted November 15, 2007 Whoa, that's like nothing I've seen before. What cha think? A T. terscheckii hybrid? Certainly the flowers put it into the northern Argentinian giants, but there is just so much other stuff that makes you go...(?). ~Michael~
PD. Posted November 16, 2007 Could be hybrid, could be climate, could be soil type, could be watering regime, could be all of the above. Dont really know. As it (mostly) fits into the terscheckii box, thats where it sits for me. Next time im there ill get some more shots of similar plants for you to ponder Michael. PD. Posted November 16, 2007 Any chance of cuts from this one ^^^ getting into the community at some stage? It is on the cards PD but get in freakin line for a cut man haha. ive been waititng a long time myself to get growing material and as for general distribution into the community, well, that is a few years down the track yet. Will be worth the wait i assure you ;)
tonic Posted November 16, 2007 As long as it's on the cards that's enough to put a smile on my dial. Consider me 'in line'. You know me dude, always looking for interesteing cuts for growing. I will eagerly anticipate the arrival of this one into the community, sounds freakin' awesome.
