Im looking for cheap ready made shipping container homes, when i search for it all the results seem to be for more high end designer type structures.

Im in melbourne, a showroom somewhere would be awesome.

Don't know what their prices are like, but have you tried http://www.royalwolf.com.au/ ? (thought of them as I drove past a depot of theirs recently) They seem to have some stuff that ranges from pretty utilitarian to fancy. Or were you thinking more basic?

A family member just picked up an ex demountable cabin from a holiday park for less than 10k. moving costs were something bloody pricey tho. They looked at a few on the coast but went for one inland as they were much better condition. Maybe this could be an option for you if you want cheap as the ammenaties are all there you just need onsite plumping/power etc. this one im talking about was 20+ years old now, there seem to be a heap being pulled out in way for fancier stuff in a few areas.

Otherwise orchestrating tradies will be a cheaper option in the long run, but may be pricks to deal with as the job would be quite small. Somebody who decks out RV's might be interested in the job and if you provide your own labour it could get cheaper also. The one thing I keep coming back to is doing it myself or at least as much as I can, youd be able to do all the finiky jobs yourself and that may even help get a good tradie onboard. They hate finiky tasks and so do their apprentices so if you can help eliminate these it will run smoother for ya.

ps - i know it shouldnt work this way but unfortunatly it does. I had to wash down bricks every afternoon for over a month last year as all the brickies had "too much work" and didnt have any chumps available to do the cleanups (there all on big construcions or in housing estates down here where the big money and contracts are). Soon as we offered this assistance they had someone there every morning for 8 hours 6 days a week :) dont get me started on plasterers....

goodluck with whatever you do dude

Apart from plumbing & electrical (assuming you are connecting to the grid or using 240V ) they are easy enough to build.

Just make sure you lift it off the ground (helps stop them rusting out from under neath quite so quickly), weld twistlocks onto 3" X 3" steel posts and you will have a removable structure on stumps.

And put a roof on it with eves, it will greatly prolong the life of the box & keep it a LOT cooler. It gets bloody hot very quickly in a box in the sun. Home made twistlocks with a lock pin are the easy way to hold a roof on. & if you ever need to move it without the roof, easy enough to unbolt & away you go.

Personally for the roof i a keen on the C section rolled steel like what is used in carports & sheds.

I quoted 1 for a friend (apart from the internal fittout) at $8500 including the move. Fit out was another $6K for a kitchenett, double sliding glass doors, 5 windows, a shower and hand basin. Toilet will be a composting unit outside under a cantilever roof. She didnt want any smell inside & living in a 40' box is kinda small for someone used to a rather large house.

"cheap ready made shipping container homes"

Cheap shipping container home would be to buy the shipping containers from some dockyard / importers, who sell off and update their containers from time to time and build it yourself.

royal wolf looks ok, theyre still pushing every single add on as an accessory and an added price. Um..yes i want doors and windows. I want something thats ready to live in.

Im not in a position to build it myself, and would prefer a relatively new rust free container. i could definitely work with a tradie, someone qualified, i would fuck it up and it would take me weeks to do what a tradie could do in 2 days.

ive dealt with RV people and custom caravan/motorhome people in the past and they are not cheap. as you say dood the moving costs for anything wider than a shipping container can be very high. sometimes more than the structure itself.

I will definitely be putting the eved roof on, thanks for that idea it will serve many purposes, and I'll pass your other ideas onto the tradie if it comes to it, although my main problem will be staying warm lol.

If your after a relatively new rust free box ring around the container parks for a single use box. Its as close to new as you are likely to find.

Oh and insulation and extra air vents are a must, it helps stop the condensation forming & the rust that comes with it.

The other thing to consider is standard V high cube, the extra height makes them feel a little less claustrophobic.
