I'm talking about the scaley piece not the healthy piece. The healthy piece getting put to other use.

Scale as in the insect pest? If so you can kill em all first and the new growth won't be affected

Sorry just realized after googling cactus diseases that it's actually rust! So what about rust infected pieces would they produce healthy pups?

Rust rot spreads through a plant's core and other vascular tissues. So yeah, it will spread to a pup if left untreated. Rust is a bitch.

Does rust spread through the vascular rings? Is that what you meant by core?

Does it start at the base and work it's way up cause it seems to be mainly the bottom 25% that is infected. Thanks for info I'll chop off the bottom and throw it. Will see how the tips go . They look ok on the outside... Hopefully hasn't spread that far on inside. Explains why they were so cheap!

Yep. I see it spread through the vascular cambium all the time. I've also seen it spread normal flesh and skin. I like to do autopsies on my cacti that fall victim to rot.
