DeadStar Posted August 28, 2015 I germinated this superkabuto a few years ago and used it for my first and only attempt at grafting. The pere it is on is to short and is in its last legs. So my question is, could i give it the chop and get it to grow its own roots or do i have to graft it onto a new rootstock. Any suggestions welcome. I dont wont to kill this one off
bogfrog Posted August 28, 2015 At this size, and considering how lovely and plump it is, I would definitely graft onto a small/medium sized trich. It will take easily cause it looks so healthy, and the growth that could be achieved in 1-2 more years on a stock makes degrafting now not so worthwhile. It also takes a long time for astro degrafts to grow roots, so may be advisible to get it a bit bigger before attempting to grow roots of its own to ensure it doesn't dry up too quickly cause its little. Matter of taste of course, but I reckon it would be loovely on a wee pach. Very cute. Well done.
bogfrog Posted August 28, 2015 Ps don't be nervous of grafting, if you can succeed on pere you can succeed on a trich for sure. If your uncertain do some practice runs with cheap cacti from garden stores.
DeadStar Posted August 28, 2015 Thanks for the advise and praise. This is one of my favorite plants i own. I think your right and i will have a look around and regraft this to a trich. I would love it to grow in its own roots but will wait a few more years before i make that decision.
