Barringtonia acutangla

Called 'Freshwater Mangrove' but grows easily in any garden. Tropial plant - I have no idea how far south it will grow.

Nice looking small tree with pretty red flowers and aleged painkilling properties of roots. Seeds collected from gaden plants.

Ok just some extra info for those that I'm sending seeds out to:

HBWR - The packs look alot bigger than they needed to be because they are still in their pods, so I hope nobody is too disapointed.

I also chucked in a little clippy with some older seeds in it. I don't know if they are any good, they may be getting too old.

Barringtonia - I hope they all arrive in good condition. I think the viability period is very short.

Each pack has about five good fresh seeds (from last week) plus two or three older ones from the week before.

The seeds are quite large and have a thin skin and a thin fiboury layer but no shell.

I have found that seeds left on a table inside in airconditioning can shrivle overnight and no doubt die.

And seeds left in a clippy bag will go moldy in a few days.

Also ants really like eating them, soil ants will burrow in and eat them, and some house ants will too.

So I would advise wetting them and planting them the day that you recive them.

Could probably find info on the internet, I haven't looked.

In their natural habitat they grow in seasonaly swampy areas. They stand in water during the wet season but withstand very dry conditions in the dry season.

In a garden they do not need wet or swampy conditions. Their tendency to grow in swampy conditions is probably compleatly because of seed fragillity. The plant its self dose not need thse conditions.

The seeds dropped in water in the wet season sprout where they sit on the waters edge. So probably try to emulate those conditions as best as possable.

The plant can tolerate quite shady positions but grows best with plenty of sun, and dose well with full sun.

I got four cranking, three got topped by wallabies last night.... I'll post some photos later... Were a bit over a foot tall yesterday...
