Any one used tea tree powder for deep cuts

Recommended Posts

Howdy

Looking into an alternative to using betadine ( it's wet), or a commercial dry antiseptic powder.

I figure tea tree as a powder has the properties I'm after.

Dune buggies are painful when they hit those road side crash barriers at 60 odd clicks an hr!

& the local hospital took too long to get some stitches.... After 3 hrs of waiting I brought some rum ( for pain relief) & cleaned it myself & just trying to dry the wound.... It's closing up & I can't see my shin bones anymore but wanting a dry antiseptic powder.... Could be a handy powder for those kinda wounds.... Any one tried it?

& before any one has a go I've got a reasonable amount of experience & understanding on medical stuff.....so I'm happy to make this assessment.... just learnt the bruising kinda whip lash can't walk properly way about my drunk Neighbours driving skills in his death trap machine;)

Tea-tree powder? Are you talking about that foot powder? That stuff is just tea-tree oil + cornstarch, I'm not sure it's a good idea to be putting starch into a deep wound. There are powder version of iodine antiseptic (i.e. betadine) like this one which I've used on wet [shallow] wounds before. I think with any deep wound you run the risk of absorbing alot of antiseptic, which could make you sick. You can buy iodine tincture instead of betadine - it's alcohol so it evaporates quickly, and doesn't leave a wet residue or waterlog the wound site like some antiseptic creams. Your best course is probably to clean the wound thoroughly and cover it, rather than dusting it with antiseptic & leaving it open.

Wound-closure strips are also handy in lieu of stitches.

Deep wounds and alcohol based antiseptic equals lots of scar tissue.

Sounds nasty mate.

Nah , not the foot powder Anodyne, thanks for the reply. but just straight up tea tree as a powder avail from new horizons or somewhere. But I can't find much on its use...I think it could make something handy... I'm going to work on that though...You right with the poisoning factor...& I used a few wound closure strips. Keeping it open to aid in drying it out. I don't mind scars Glaukus!! ;)

So you want to put powdered plant material into an open wound? That doesn't sound like a great idea. What's going to happen to all the non-soluble material?

I know tea-tree oil is an antiseptic, but is powdered plant material going to have a strong enough concentration of oil to even be effective? If not, you've got a wound full of non-sterile sawdust. If so, you're still going to have to clean that sawdust out of there at some point. Though I'm not sure exactly what "tea-tree powder" is, so I might be misunderstanding something here. :scratchhead:

And is the wound already infected & weeping? Is that why you want to dry it out? Because if it's fresh & not infected, it's supposed to be somewhat wet - dry tissue won't heal up as well. There are plenty of breathable dressings.

I'm not that silly Anodyne....but sure what I wrote sounded like I wanted to put sawdust in my wounds...removing the paint & dirt with tweezers & irrigating was enough fun ! .;) ended up making

a compress with sterilized tea tree bark powder & a couple of other herbs/ diluted oils & used that over the wound as a fairly dry compress . Wrapped it for a bit... & will see what happens....but it looks & feels a lot better. Next stage is a different herb/ oil combo compress to promote the next stage.... Any suggestions on what native plants might work?

Not a plant but maybe you could consider treatment as usual + the addition of L-tryptophan 1% which "shows promising potential in the development of a novel therapy targeting wound healing".

"Our clinical trial on Trp showed a significant beneficial effect on wound healing. Pain was reported to be lower and wound area reduction was accelerated compared to vehicle gel, the control treatment. Interestingly, 19% of patients under Trp treatment showed complete wound closure while no case was reported in the control group." [1]

piss on it, then wait till it drys.

then use Tarzan super glue to bring the seams together. You gotta hold them together for a minute or two but on a bottle of sailor jerry's rum watching yourself hold the folds of skin together would be a walk in the park.

hope it has healed alty and you're not elucidating on your home medico exercise.

butterfly strips...superglue if it serious and its all ya got....use it sparingly as it can burn the wound.

I've superglued myself a coupla times....its best for the deep and sharp kinda wound but.

If its trying to keep itself moist, which I've found a lotta deep ones do to heal, a bit of honey doesn't go astray as a thin film.

Australian only....thats because we dont have nitrofurans in Aus honey.....yet (used for disease control o'seas).

That said I shouldnt be treating anyone....lol

EDIT - and if its honey....its Manuka teatree

I get quite a lot of sea ulcers from reef/rock cuts and they tend to get deeper and deeper every time i go surfing if all i use is betadine, but if after a surf i cover it with a slice of garlic and a bandaid it dries out really quick any infection disappears almost overnight and healing seems much quicker.

edit:but that wound sounds pretty gnarly alt.....would need a lot of garlic

My buddy who's a chronic 7 day a week rock hopper also uses garlic, the crazy bastards always cut up and hangin ten! I'd put a garlic compress in the rounds mate like the above poster mentioned.

Super glue, well my dad used it once on a chisel wound on his thumb, and he's still got it so a thin film should work wonders ;)

Thanks for the replies..

Can stand up & walk again after using some of the advice from you guys....

I like the idea of piss Ethereal but my piss would ve put me back into that hole that originally allowed me to make the decision that it was a good idea to go on a ride on a death machine! & as far as superglue putting a whole tube on it didnt sound like fun !! ;)

I went with some steri strips, & a compress of Bottlebrush & Tea tree powder bark & a couple of other herbs with internal High doses of Vit C - so much so you almost Shite yourself! At least Im cleansed inside now too ;)

Cant forget the Manuka honey to cover it while it seeps....That stuff is gold!

The swelling has gone down, its dried out & it doesnt take me 5 minutes to get up from the couch.

Hypericum oil on my whip lashed muscles has also worked a treat!

Now to find something to help the lacerated muscle fibres to heal together.

They look pretty cool in an open wound!

So thanks for the replies!

Moral of the story is:

Dont expect less than a 6 hr wait at an emergency department... sure people are dying, but some only need to be told they need a poo.

Dont get on a death machine dune buggy with your neighbour who hasnt slept & only brought it that morning to find out the the brakes dont work & the accelerator jams!

& dont hit crash barriers at 60 odd km an hr. They buckle but the energy has to go elswhere.

Seeing your life flash before your eyes is an odd experience!
