Why would anyone have a cat as a pet!

Recommended Posts

Stuck in the city for a few weeks to make some $ so my mother has graciously allowed me to stay with her. Just watched her neighbours cat stalk birds onto her front lawn! First impulse was to grab my gun! Rant Rant Rant :P

Cats are like humans in that way, controllable to a point but still conniving and self serving.

Just to clarify I object to it being allowed to roam free, come into my mums yard and kill what it likes. Before it sounds like Im on my high horse, my dogs are no better, they catch birds sometimes and kill other native animals. The point is Ive got my dogs well tied up (180kg chains as they broke the 120kg chains, good effort for 25kg dogs) so they DONT kill things, things like the next door neighbours cat. Oh and Im the one in trouble for my dogs going ballistic barking at the cat in mums yard!

They love eating feral cats!

I do know a few good cat owners that go to great lengths to keep their cats from roaming.

For the last 12-14 months we have had cat issues with the people next door (which is a duplex)

It first started one day when I went out record shopping one day, left the back door open with the screen door closed/locked (has a doggy door set to go in but not out so if my dog wants to go out - she has to nag me to let her out into the heat..)

Come home to smelling this weird smell (only in the kitchen), didn't think much of it as I had some empty tuna cans on the sink I forgot to clean out. Wasn't until the next day the lounge room started to smell. I had my little dog (west highland white terrier) come back from nan and pops (they look after her sometimes) and this was when I discovered a cat hiding under my lounge.

Opened the back door and the cat took off. I hadn't realized but it pissed all over my 2 spare bedroom mattresses (completely fucked), pulled down the curtains in the spare rooms and also fucked the fly screen on my back door trying to escape..

I spoke to the local ranger who said I could use a private trap as all the council ones were in use. A day later I had this cat caught. No microchip. Feral. Stank like fuck. But, it did have an owner (woman next door in her 40s). Cat was picked up by a local boarding kennel and cattery worker. Put down 7 days later.

In the last 12 months we have caught 7 cats, ALL which belong to the same woman, not one has a microchip implanted in them but I often saw them sitting between the window and the curtain of one of her bedroom window. These cats would all come into my backyard, eat my dogs food, piss everywhere, stir up my dog and then leave.

What has pissed us off is nothing can be done in regards to the woman who keeps buying cats as I cannot 100% officially prove they belong to her since they don't have microchips. I have spoken to the woman next door a number of times and she has a zero fuck given attitude.

Pet owners in general who do not take responsibility for their pets are absolute cunts.

Agreed. My dogs are guard dogs back home, I expect them to chase away other animals, people etc. Walking them in the city is a pain in the arse, not because they are particularly aggressive or dangerous, but because where as I always walk them on a lead, no one else does. I get dogs running from ages away towards me with the owner yelling "its ok he's friendly!" Im standing there thinking "thats fine, but my dogs arent going to like this", my dogs see this other dog bolting towards them and immediately go into defensive mode. The abuse I cop from the other dog owners about my apparently "unsociable dogs" drive me nuts.

Got another problem with a small terrier coming into my mums yard at the moment. He is old and I feel sorry for him. His owners wont lock him up (talked to them and they said oh just bring him back and close the gate, because they never close the gate) anyway the old bugger just keeps walking right up to my dogs going nuts tied up and of course if they have a go at him its my fault.

Responsibility.

Something people think others should do on their behalf.

Fuck those people.

Yeah that's bullshit. Especially where it's law to have them on leads. I feel that having your dog on a lead is the responsible thing to do, regardless of whether they're friendly or not. There's a bloke who lives near me who walks his dogs without a lead and they run around pissing and shitting in peoples yards, running onto the road. They're gonna cause an accident one of these days.

I dont see the issue with a well trained dog not being on a lead.

Never had an issue with my dog, she keeps to herself and does what she's told.

Bullit, most cat owners on here see the feral cat problem for what it is. The problem i see is the "cat shooters" around here have an inability to distinguish between feral and domestic cats.

Once a cat leaves the property it is registered to, it is classed as trespassing.

Don't want your cat shot, trapped etc? Keep it on your property. Simple really.

Does the same go for dogs and small children?

I guess if you want to be a cunt about it haha. Otherwise the nice thing to do is to talk to the owner. I tend to rather keep things as my problem/burden then force and issue with someone.

I know of a few people who shoot dogs on site if they are on their property, cats too. Children is a bit different, culturally its frowned upon to shoot children :P

Another way to put it would be if you, your dog, cat or child comes onto my property and gets mauled by my restrained dog, whose fault is that and will my dog suffer for your choice? Previous experience tells me its likely to be considered my fault, Im the bad dog owner and Ive got then got the dangerous dog- how is that fair?

I would imagine the same applies to dogs, yes, although they can't jump 6 - 8 foot fences free willy nilly.

Children at least have a modium of control and is completely different from pets.

If I am on the farm hunting and I see a cat or a dog come onto my property...

It's not fair since another animal trespassed but that is how fucked up the laws are. The "dangerous" creature is always in the wrong even though it was in the correct place.

People in general need to stop being ignorant and take responsibility for their animals. People can't understand it wouldn't have happened if their animal was kept in check.

Coming from someone who owns a (completely inside) cat, I feel that it's my responsibilty to both keep my cat from hunting and also keep it from danger. The dangers being 1080 bait, other dogs, traps, snakes etc.

Cats are pretty much the only domesticated animal capable of reverting back to its feral state, so therefore it is owners reaponsibilty to keep cats indoors and if that is not possible, to have it registered, tagged, and sterilised.

Never had a dingo x then i assume?

Ive had a dingo x blue that used to climb an 8ft fence (at age 16)

Also had a border collie who climbed a 12ft fence.

Also, i call bullshit on your trespassing cats law. Without doing any reading i can confidently say that there is no state or federal law that would back you up on that. Regulations on pets are a local councils responsibility.

Besides, trespass is an offense committed against property, not by property.

You had a border collie that could climb 3.65m vertical fence? Did said fence have a stuff placed directly next to it to help the dog get that high or was it step fence? in terms of dogs being agile, border collies are right up there but 12 foot is extreme.

I never stated federally or state, but you are correct on the fact that it is councils which regulate the responsibilities of pet owners, and in my council once a cat leaves it's registered property - it is trespassing. It is something that should be implemented federally. Cats are a nuisance, particularly killing native birds.

"Besides, trespass is an offense committed against property, not by property."

If I came into your property without your permission then I would be trespassing.. Same applies to a cat in terms of leaving it's registered property. It is going somewhere it is not supposed to be....

End of.

The kids next door hang their legs over our fence and bang and shout so as to purposely make the dogs bark. The parents of these miniature devil spawn had the nerve to complain to the council for the dogs barking.

I calmly walked over to the neighbours house and explained that if one of her children slipped over the fence into the backyard the dogs wouldn't hesitate to maul (give or take a few swear words while explaining this).

Needless to say, the dogs don't bark anymore and the children don't bang on the fence.

People just need to keep their kids and animals in check.

This is why :)

th_IMG_1686.jpg

We spent money to raise the height of the backyard fence, and bought bird-deterrent spikes to glue to the fence as extra insurance (was kinda hoping the rude little kids next door would have an accident...), and they're not allowed out there pre-dawn or post-dusk anyway. The new house's landscaping is going to be restricted by fence height and catmesh also. The cats aren't overly fussed if they don't go outside anyway. I've had Peanut's (the black one) claw stuck into the flesh of my arm nearly piercing right through; my partner had to get it out gently because I couldn't get a good angle, once because I'd been to a swimming pool and smelled like chlorine (which makes her go bonkers). She sat still and didn't yowl and I actually got the impression via body language she was sorry for hurting me. She's also accidentally hooked two claws into my face when we were playing, making it look like I'd gotten a lip ring. The ginger is the sweetest soul and such a sook, but he's dopey as fuck and a scaredy cat, which means he suddenly digs his claws in when startled. It's a little pain, but who cares? The joy of companionship with an animal who WANTS to be in your presence is a lot more satisfying to me than an animal that's just around to get fed. The cheese-queefing eggberts who don't take pet ownership responsibly are the ones to blame; not the animals.

I'm not even a huge fan of birds in cages either, so the lorikeets who trusted me enough to bring their babies down to be fed at our house (which we're moving back to) was such a thrill. One time when there were two babies, they were so used to me that I had to get going and one sat on my head while I went down the ramp around to the carport and had to shoo him off to get in the car. I tried not to overfeed them so they wouldn't get too reliant on me. I really hope they're still there when we go back.
