glowing shroom grow kits

Recommended Posts

Hi ppl I'm trying to find info on glowing mushroom glow kits. i want to set one up for my gfs bday, she'll be stoked if i can have it up and running in a month. My questions are has anyone tried one of these? Can anyone recommend a brand? Will I be able to have them fruiting in a month?

I'm thinking of getting a ghost mushrooms since they grow in Australia down south, does anyone know if they'll grow on the sunshine coast through winter? Or are there other sorts I should try and lastly can I grow more than one sort in the same container?

I am a total noob when it comes to fung and I'm on a short time frame so any info will be valuable I'm also interested in any glowing spores that will grow through winter.

I took some prints and cultures of these this year in Victoria if anyone wants to trade or something. Though with the disclaimer that the cultures have been in the fridge for a while and the prints have turned slightly brown in some places like he tinfoil rusted or something :-/

The few patches of omphalotus nidiformis I have found this year fruited for only about 2 weeks. Also one patch had a considerably brighter glow than the other 2 I came across, so strain must make a difference even within the species.

Check some of my pics here, this was from the brightest patch I found this year. http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=36644&page=2&hl=nidiformis#entry466500

Also, whilst they absolutely do glow, you need to be in quite a dark environment to see it. The pics I took had a shutter time of 25 to 30 seconds so that allowed plenty of time for light to hit the camera sensor.

If you go into a completely dark room and let your eyes adjust you can see it pretty well, but they won't look as bright as they seem in my photos. Also, if you find a patch in the wild it's pretty awesome to go back to it at night and stand in the dark forest with glowing green things all around you. :)

And FYI, our omphalotus nidiformis are supposed to be the brightest of the glowing fungi. Just don't expect it to be like a nightlight or anything. :)

[edit] - if you look about 3 posts further down from the link I posted you'll see a comparison between some bright ones and some not so bright ones that were found at a different place.

Thanks for the info Zed. I'm almost a complete noob to mushroom growing(or hunting for that matter) the glowing ones might be something to try out when I get the hang of it. Be interesting to work out if it's just the strain or maybe what it's growing on/near that gets it to produce more of whatever chemical is making it grow.

There are supposed to be some strains of Panellus stipticus that glow stronger, but thats based on reading about.

How long they last would depend on substrate and growing conditions being suitable for fruiting (temp, moisture etc).

I'm working on a log now, but it takes time to colonise....waiting to see how it ends up...still no signs of mycelleium at the logs ends yet,
