Editing Threads

Recommended Posts

This my own little bitch

I believe that editing threads is needed in times for adding things that were missed, correcting mistakes etc.
I think, however, that you should not be able to completely REMOVE the post. OR if you can remove the immediate appearance of the post in the thread you should have an option to be able to SEE what the original was.

It's fucking annoying to go through old threads and just see dot after dot after fucking dot.
Might as well just delete the threads. They are broken and disjointed and pretty useless.

If you have issues with posting shit that you regret then you should probably take some resonsibility for your own actions, think more about what you do before you do it and/or live with the consequences if you are unable to.

And how can you trust anything said by people in threads if they can just go back through and remove shit?
Or you can purposelly set people up to look like dickheads later on by simply changing the message or tone of message after an argument etc.
My own personal opinion and I don't doubt there will be much disagreement. People do seem to like to be able to cover their ass retroactively and not worry about the consequences of their actions at the time of making them.

And as a little side not.
I find it quite amusing and hypocritcal considering how often people from all walks of life complain about lack of accountability and/or transparency in organisations or groups.
This is that exact same problem. People aren't accountable for their actions and posts and there is no transparency because pretty much everything can be covered up.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that Ace :P

If you read my threads you'll notice most of them have been edited. I hate it when I re-read something and see primary school level grammatical errors.

I also have a habit of missing words or sometimes writing them twice. I never go back to edit the content, it's just an effort to make me appear less retarded.

What about sales n trade threads?

Just hypothetically speaking, you happen to sell a heap of stuff real cheap and you dont want people standardising or expecting other stuff in the future will be real cheap.

I reckon after the stuff is sold its ok too edit the thread, or at least remove the prices and quantities.

I think that sales threads should stay up so that there can be some kind of standardied pricing begin to appear over time.
I feel half the time that people get something cheap just to try and rip off the newbies to a hobby.
If you are getting rid of things on one offs or for some special reason then just highlight that in the post itself?
If someone is enough of a jack ass to expect a special rate when the original post states a specific reason for the excessively cheap price then they deserve to be told to fuck off.

It would also be a good way to ensure that if prices on things do go up (which they always have to over time due to inflation) it's not crazy excessive. People can look back at what it was priced at and decide if the increase is reasonable or not.
If some person thinks not I'm sure another will think its fair anyway.

I think editing a for sale thread to put crosses through things or mark things as sold is a great idea though otherwise it gets confusing.

torsten hates it too ace, in fact, i believe that sabotaging threads by deleting all of your input (so the rest of the thread no longer makes sense) can earn you a warnie or a ban or somesuch.

if you see somebody in the process of deleting all of their posts, report it asap and the mods might intervene.

I often edit my posts but that's because I'm crap at typing. Editing whole content of posts or making them blank is annoying..

But I think sometimes its mods removing/editing offensive posts? Or am I wrong in thinking they do that.

the mods would, i believe, usually some kind of note, or remove the post entirely rather than leave a dot. i could be wrong. if there are dots everywhere by the same user then it's the result of a hissyfit departure or a paranoid departure.

there are only so many options in the forum software i guess, and legitimate reasons for editing. there is at least one thread where torsten discusses his reasons for choosing these settings.

perhaps if you strongly believe something could be improved then post in 'site and forum matters'.
