Question

to me... a bunch of Trichocereus validus , am I wrong? - micromegas' plant

t.validus.jpg

This one labelled valida , I believe in order to keep 2 clones separately named as so .... reminds me of a lumberjackus on steroids!!!

-purely by haircut alone though ... - Fields plant

IMGP2712.jpg

http://trichoseriousethnobotany.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/trichocereus-valida.html

and on to a progeny from possibly the same cactus... if not, then the other clone there...

(personal fave cactus pic on the planet for starting it off -it being : the re-ignition point of my recent obsession with validus) - brettloth's plant and possible origin from his truely amazing site: Trichoseriousethnobotany

IMGP0006.JPGIMGP2772.JPGIMGP2979.JPG

the spines kind of curve off to the right looking at the front of the cactus ...judging by this arial shot so long as it's not in reverse

-giving the impression they're curving off to the left if you look at the top half of the pic, which is blatantly the back of the cactus

TH, you remember the fatty tip I sent you had some spines cut.

here's how the base pups, pretty spiny

first it makes a comb/spider like 7-8 spines around and then more outwards spines from the upper part of the areole. there's also a wool which is more e"extrovert" than any terschekii and pasacana I got and have seen. THey too make wool them areoles, but in this ones, I am seeing a hair going outwards a la Orecereus and other hairy columnars.

RAWWWRZ , isn she a beauty!

i love the extrovert fluffage, and the voluptuous rib bulges

and aye it was I who relieved most of the rest of it's spines since it kept "rolling" around in my grip and slaying my hands from all the checking for roots that still haven't errupted from that lump where it's healed lol

maybe that's why i havent been spiked bad by a cactus in ages.. :P

ok so i learned recently that the validus seeds were originally from Ritter?

He was the fearless wild seed hunter wasn't he?

would that not make the validus a wild plant initially?

-and I'ze still not feeling terscheckii for validus ..

but dang i need to learn some history about this absolute hero ...

I'm lucky enough to have a ritter scop and fulvilanus knowingly ...

Hey Horsey, all the plants from Friedrich Ritter were wild collected plants. Back then, nobody really cared, what eventually lead to CITES being created because of the constant overharvesting of wild plants. Some populations were almost extinct after just 50 years of industrial cactus collection. And that underlines how much of a threat humans can actually pose if there wasnt any protection method in place.

That being said...some CITES regulations are blown out of proportions and totally unrealistic. People cant even ship pups of live Echinopsis and Trichocereus hybrids and that´s just ridiculous.

yeah imho plants to and from the status of "in cultivation", should only be controlled in the respect of hygeine/bugs/plant diseases/invasives etc...

And... if anything really would make sense , it would be to repopulate the affected areas that our ancestors pillaged with our finest and best immaculate plants and protect them in their home lands ..

which of course with my beloveds that would mean all but central and south america would be free to trade unabated...

Do you know if anybody is carrying out any re-population of cactacea in the wild at all?

or that a completely different kettle of fish that I may be unaware of?

if i manage to flower 2 nice validus one day, I think I might try to track down any Bolivians sympathetic to the cause..

and wow , after scrolling back through the thread I can see just how much further in learning I have come thanks to the world's greatest cactus heroes of the modern era... thanks you guys :)

lols at old self ..

umm yeah , what about the wild collected seeds of Ritter?

or are they non existant and I'm mistaken ,

and perhaps actually they are the seeds from wild plants from Ritter?

I wonder if his spirit can be asked?.. and possibly answer from the other side anything we might need to know...

A large part of the seeds on the market are probably from wild seeds and populations. Back then, nobody cared and when they introduced CITES, they decided that all plants before that date did not need certification as it was just how it was back then. It wouldnt have been possible or practicable to destroy all plants on the market just because they may or may not could have been from the wild.

There are a lot of FR plants on the market. I suspect that the PC is Ritter´s Trichocereus Riomizquensis and there is a Macrogonus from FR that I sometimes come across. The FR991 is the most common Scop on the market and most of the Trichocereus Bridgesii are most likely Ritter´s population from La Paz in Bolivia.

This is a 1 year old Validus X Peruvianus.

It's fat and has short spines.

Unfortunately it has a scale issue I'm trying to stay on top of.
