Dreamwalker. Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) its not soft & mushy, but I guess the rapid growth, thin skin..high humidly etc has caused this pathogen...appreciate advice that might save it, should I degraft it & dry it out, or should I leave it & hope for the best?....is it likely to get worse?...will it spread to the other cacti?....its a 150mm Corryocactus brevistylus....it had 2 pups which I cut & grafted, see pic's...that was a while ago ...but maybe it provided access for the pathogen. & wondering about this stenocereus too...had black spots on it for a few weeks now...seems stable..its the round 1 on left of pic... ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) I dont really know buddy but i tend to jump to EG's sulphur alcohol-(and toothbrush - advice for spidermite originally) whenever i see anything black appear on my cacti (minus the toothbrush - dont wanna spread it rlly) what I do is get alcohol hand wash gel and blob enough not to drip too much over the black stuff then blow sulphur over it till it has a nice surface layer.. (the tub of sulphur is one of those you squeeze to blow sulphur over plants in the garden - labelled garden sulphur) ask EG or Zelly ? I'll bet they haz the minerals to be able to answer it , maybe theyll see and post soon guessing they might say keep it dry as possible too or give it plenty of fresh air / ventilate its grow space is it outdoor or in? - just out of curiosty Edited January 26, 2015 by ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ
Dreamwalker. Posted January 26, 2015 guessing they might say keep it dry as possible too or give it plenty of fresh air / ventilate its grow space is it outdoor or in? - just out of curiosty I've got some sulphur...was thinking about coating it ...but the boggy is inside it..... Its inside on top a massive 2m san p log...all roped in....surrounded by other massive logs...pack in tight...no way is it coming out...ventilations a bit of a big ask too...I don't mind degrafting it...& drying it outside, its big...3 years growth in as many months..just don't want to see the rest of the family hit. ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted January 26, 2015 bugger! never had anything that deep without slicing it out and sulphuring the wound but thispic shows how deep that was , maybe early response was key ? then again for all i know they might say leave it n watch for pups or somethn if its that black rot thing
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) ive seen info on uk forums that say : cut the affected area away + a bit, heal with sulphur ....and wait on pups. thats purely off memory so have no link and sorry, I meant is the cactus outdoor or indoor ... by outside or in , as opposed to the rot lol Edited January 26, 2015 by ☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ
doxneed2c-me Posted January 26, 2015 Sometimes I notice the areoles get black at times on columnar cactus. I am still inexperienced but that might be what is happening in the second one. The first one looks rough but I think it is Zelly who usually says to leave everything alone don't jump right to the heavy artillery. I use sulphur on some things and it does help most afflictions I have seen my cacti battle. Sulfur is about as far as I would go with treatments. Another idea is to dry it out and put it in the shade for a bit.
Dreamwalker. Posted January 26, 2015 and sorry, I meant is the cactus outdoor or indoor ... by outside or in , as opposed to the rot lol cacti in side gh,,,,,,last few days have been super hot, as I mentioned it happen overnight...the yellowing blackening that is. Can't cut it out ...its completely circled it, could maybe cut the tip off & regraft, but I suspect the pathogen would be all over/in it. dox...Its only the 1 cactus scion....from different angles (except for the stenocerus at base)
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) heat waves can suck ass then for adult plants/grafts i guess , definitely not a fun thing for seedlings either ventilation wasn't a possibility here (mainly due to mosquitoes and other insects) till i got mesh to screen off some windows , thankfully since venting and using sulphur n alcohol , and DE granular kitty litter as a media...: they've been virtually rot free and healthy... best alternative i can find is pummice ... its usually 75%+ humidity here all the time ... (most commonly 89%) - 84% at this moment in time except during the odd heatwave from the saharan winds.. Another factor that also contributed (i think) was: with-holding urine tek for all but nitrogen deficient cacti oh yeah , i blow a few clouds of sulphur on them every month or two ... Evil Genius Posted January 26, 2015 Hi Dreamwalker, this is probably lost. Only option would be to use very strong fungicides and sulfur but it look like it might already be too late for that.
Evil Genius Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) Shit happens! Dust off your jacket and move on. Just make sure to disinfect the complete growing space to get rid of the contaminant. The other plant looks like it will probably get over it, but make sure to keep it really dry. Don´t cut it or it will get infected again. wert Posted January 26, 2015 Looks like its been enclosed in high humidity to me. Im no expert but ide put it outdoor in the sun and let nature do its thing. If that helps?
