Black spined "cereus" ID

Question

I got this as a "cereus" from a CSSSA show about 18 months ago. I quizzed the grower on what it was but he didn't know. He just said the plant had been in his garden for a long time and he took cuts from it and sold them at the shows. He couldn't give me any more info than that.

I never repotted it so it hasn't really grown at all so far.

I'd love to know what it is or at least get more of an idea if people can help.

Cheers!

have the spines got little lines on them? , may need a magnifying glass

but yeah feeling a sway toward Neoraimondia / Neocardenasia herzogiana thing..

Another growth update. It's looking very cereus to my amateur eye at the moment. The ribs have grown with a very typical cereus thinness to them whereas when it wasn't growing it was quite fat. Starting to grow reasonably quickly now too, putting on at about 2-3cm in the last month at least.

Ok, this is obviously a Cereus. I know there is a Black Spine Form of Cereus Validus and it looks very similar to this. Please note that this form is not the same as the related form cereus forbesii which i posted in Mutants ID Thread earlier today. The Genus Cereus, in particular Cereus Forbesii & Cereus Validus are a Mess. And not like Trichocereus but a real Mess. I work on an Overview of the Cereus Species if i manage to get good Pics from botanical Gardens but so far, good Picture Material with confirmed ID is hard to get.

Yes, I have seen images listed as both C. forbesii and C. validus that appear to match mine the closest. I'm happy to have narrowed it down that close though. Much better than nothing. :)
