catha edulis pollen

Recommended Posts

I have no idea if there is a demand for it???? but if anyone wants some I have access to a red, and white khat plant, that are flowering atm. Would be happy to trade or if youve got nothing to swap just cover the postage cost and ill send it out. Oh yeah, if you want some it would be good if you could instruct me on how to collect it :) i dont have a clue :scratchhead:

cheers

that's nice of you to think that way, but probably demand for catha pollen is low. thats because catha pretty much all of the time selfpollinates. as a fact it's quite tricky to foreign pollinate catha edulis if you want to controll the outcome. but if you are just happy to apply the pollen to the flowers without much further thought, go ahead, you might be able to produce some x breeds aswell. what i mean is, it's easy to put say narrowleaf pollen over the red flowers and than watch out if any of those seeds will turn into plants which display characters of both parents. but it's very difficult to make sure one particular flower has been pollinated only by the pollen of your choice.

one needs very steady (neurosurgeon like skills, auxin would call it) hands and patience to x pollinate catha in a controlled fashion. i have managed to x breed vienna white and narrowleaved, and posted about this a few years ago.

i hope that people will try to foreign pollinate, catha edulis as those x breeds might display extreem virgor, health and with luck even high actives levels.

when the catha edulis flower opens, she after a while is receptable, and than later the stamina stopps beeing able to recive pollen, but the pollen sack of the same flower now sheds it's pollen.

this means your best chances to x pollinate without much mucking around, is to look out for "wet staminas" and apply them with some pollen, and to repeat this process several times over a few weeks.

the way i did it was by cutting off the pollen sacks even before they developed, and by removing all flowers which haven't had been emasculated.

good luck, this is exciting stuff and i hope your thread helps to get some results!!

im glad u have informed me planthelper. I read here somewhere that it needs to be cross pollinated for viable seed. I am told you are the khat expert... so thanks for bringing me out of the dark.

ahwel... thanks for the info planthelper, might have a go at trying to x. just one question, what do you use to apply pollen to the staminas?

Conan- these have taken just over 3 weeks from when the first flowers opened to nearly full bloom. Im guessing another week and theyll be at their peak.

cheers

cotton bud's are very popular for brushing on some pollen, however i hardly use them.

in case of the catha, i pinched out the whole anther with some tweezers, and than rubbed the pollen sack against the stamina.

Does anyone have any tips on how to bring a catha into flower? I have one plant that is 3 years old, it is over 30cm tall it has 2 trunks and I'm growing it in a pot due to the area I live gets freezing temp in winter.

it is over 30cm tall

Perhaps a bit small. Once mine hit 3m, they began flowering profusely every year. It's hard to get them to grow fast in a pot, if you lived in a warmer area it could easily hit 3m in two growing seasons.
