facebook name changes

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

God damn facebook made me change my name. Apparently theyre cracking down on all the fake names on there and require government id to prove who you are!

I really dont like having my real name or birthdate on there at all, in fact you would assume any responsible organisation would actively discourage it.

So now what do i do now? has anyone sent in id to facebook as proof? how thorough were they with it? I really dont like the idea of them having copies of official Id floating around. i was wondering if i could fob em off with a licence off fakies.com?

how does facebook know u are a fake.

are they checking up on you.

I don't do facebook, but my advice is dump them.

stick to emails for real friends and family and join

forums for like minded people.

unless you're comfortable with giving asio/nsa a complete list of your identity/address/ph + all of your friends, close contacts, their contacts and theirs etc. all in one handy package then I would advise against it.

Just make it a less fake sounding name. I don't use my real name on there and will always get away with it

Slightly off topic, but I people need to think before they post stuff on there and here. from a few facebook pages I can tell who atleast 5 members of this forum are from what they post, which isnt good if you are trying to stay anonymous

Agreed. Make your fake name sound like a real one for FB use rather than your own name.

You might have luck contacting someone in the drag queen community to assist you in getting your account accepted. A little googling should help you figure out what to do but you can PM me if you can't figure it out.

@doublebenno: it is pretty fucked up, yeah. And I'd never heard of them asking anyone for ID..?

The thing that freaks me out the most is the facial recognition software they use for tagging photos, and that it can accurately recognize faces a good deal of the time. Just think about that for a second, and then think about the fact that when you upload any data to Facebook, it's basically theirs to keep and use as they see fit. They have a library of contact info, private conversations, political affiliations, interests, known friends and verified mugshots for a billion people.

Think of what that sort of information would mean in the wrong hands.

it's good that people have their "scam awareness" hat on, but i'm gonna go right ahead and give HB and WW more credit than that. when you consider what facebook actually is... not quite an identity theft scam but a sly information collection scheme with something to gain by ensuring that they know who their users are (and who have always stated in their terms of use that users must give real name etc) then it makes 100% sense that they are demanding proof of identity the same way you'd expect a financial institution to. banks don't want to give you a loan unless they know who you are, facebook doesn't want to collect information on you unless they know who you are.

kudos to anyone who was wiley enough to actually receive demands for identity.

Yeah its definitely a real facebook action and not a scam. I think im going to push the point with them, the name i was using is what i have been known as for a long time and even though i dont have and government id under this name, i could get plenty of stat decs from plenty of people that know me proving the point.

I think facebook really is a necessary evil theses days, i wouldnt know about any doofs or parties without it pretty much. I faced the fact quite a while ago, that if you use the internet at all then people can gather data on you and use it for whatever need they like.

Oooh I'd forgotten how exciting that other thread was, revolutions and everything. I must be demented.

Um yes, it's not a scam. They ended up with a mobile phone number, it was that that was holding things back. I think. It doesn't seem to work for everyone but maybe by spamming their awful help"desk" with aggressive emails I somehow got their attention. I doubt it though, it helped me let off steam a bit while I planned my next shopping trip. I need a revolution in my wardrobe.

I oppose the "real name" policy facebook has for many reasons, not just personal privacy. Some individuals need to be kept safe as possible from their governments, it is a death penalty to be gay in many countries so there will be many people who would not want their identity exposed by a vicious corporation. The same goes for political dissidents, some of who are working against very evil governments. The Drag Queen protest is loud and exuberant, just like the Queen's themselves, and I'm glad they are doing it, but their reasons seem more about their own profession rather than genuine protection of some minority groups.

Facebook is both a corporate and government organisation (I see little difference nowadays) and I will welcome the day when someone else builds a platform that works as well and I can persuade my friends to join. Ello is really incredibly shit as an alternative and it is so bad I almost believe it was a dummy site set up just to trap all the trans and homosexual people easily. Or to deter people from using anything other than facebook. I dunno. It is so poorly constructed it's practically unusable.

I do understand when people say to avoid facebook and the like, but to take that to extremes is to cut yourself off from a lot of information. If you don't participate, how can you influence others? You become silenced, marginalised and unable to communicate as effectively as everyone else. It is almost a revolutionary act to be yourself, out and proud, telling everyone EXACTLY what you think, and bedamned with the consequences,

BECAUSE YOU ARE A REAL PERSON AND YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO TELL THE WORLD HOW YOU FEEL.

I wonder how long it will take before someone capitalises on the space in the market for a social media platform which doesnt position data collection as the highest priority. Surely there are plenty of people who have left fb but still wish to have an easy system to keep in touch with globally dispersed friends and family without sacrificing any small iota of privacy which may be left available to us.

Seen a couple pop up, seems like as soon as the money is there or the possibility of money is there they sell out your privacy :(

Any good suggestions of sites with a code of ethics or something they will have to stick to even if it gets popular..

Bullit, future employers can track your facebook history to determine if you're employable.

Now replace 'future employers' with 'blank' and 'determine if you're employable' to 'blankity blank'.

HOLY SHIT THAT'S SCARY(no sarcasm).

I've been told those facebook notifications are robotic, just break the robot and you're free. Unfortunately I have no actual anecdote of someone doing something other than them saying they have done it.

Fake ID seems like a good idea to me, just remove the australian insignias and replace them with drawings of cats.
