Trichocereus fruits

Question

PC fruits, im assuming pollinated by PC as nothing else was open.

makes me wonder how long pollen would stay viable after being collected by a bee, could a bee come back 24 hours after collecting pollen and still have some residue left over that would produce a fruit. i dont know. but if so the possibillites begin to grow. guess ill have to wait and see what the seeds produce.

I now have a Psycho0 X Yowie fruit ripe and ready to have it's seed sorted too. It split open a couple of days ago.

Pic showing it next to the Yowie X Psycho0 fruit from post #26 to show how much bigger it is. (It's fucking huge!) My guess is it might have something to do with the Psycho0 only having one single flower for the year and one fruit to worry about whereas they Yowie had literally over 30 flowers over this summer so I assume it was putting more energy into those than this plant's single fruit.

yeah thats the info i have too, no PC x PC. spach is the only self fertile trich to my knowlwdge, thats why it makes me wonder, maybe something else was still slightly open ( it was certainly close, within 24 hours ), or maybe a bee had pollen from the day before. it could be crossed with field pach or scop,

this has happened before, random PC fruit with nothing that could have pollnated it, i was slack with seed and only got it sown late last year so still waiting for any noticable traits.

ill share all this years seed around if peeps are keen. might just mention it here though, i only want to send to folks who know what theyre doin.

nice zed! i reckon one of the scop fruits i have might come close to that size. certainly not as hairy, almost no hair.

Yowie X scopulicola fruit - seems less hairy than the Yowie X Psycho0 was. It busted very wide open too.

when i do they will come in packs as follows..

fields x PC fruit 1,2,3 and 4.

fields x pc second flush 5th fruit.

and scop x ? fruit 1,2,3 and 4 in the order that they pop.

will be about 50 seeds of each, you gotta take the whole lot.

all free. scops are a still a little way off so nothing as yet.

fields seeds are all done, dry and stored except for the 5th fruit.

Yowie X PC pach

post-13830-0-49469700-1427069510_thumb.j

"PC pach X scop" = the 2 fruits on the left - "PC pach X Peru" is on the right

post-13830-0-08169300-1427069550_thumb.j

2 x PC pach X Scop fruits compared to 1 Yowie X Scop fruit. The Yowie fruits are much darker green than the PC which basically looks a light lime green colour. The PC fruits are also a lot larger than the Yowie fruits. The PC fruits are a similar size to how large my Psycho0 fruit was earlier in the year.

This info supports M S Smith's hypothesis that the PC clone could be a bridgesii hybrid rather than pachanoi

Well yes, with the exception that I have simply regarded the PC as being closer in "relationship" to T. bridgesii than to T. pachanoi. I have thought out loud that it might be a hybrid, but there really is no telling without more information. It would be nice to find the PC growing in habitat somewhere, but as it stands the closest thing to the PC that I can find is the plant called T. riomizquensis (first NMCR followed by Sacred Succulents) and the Trichocereus of Cochabamba, Bolivia. The former more similar than the latter in my estimation, this even though the cities of Cochabamba and Mizque are just around 150 km apart. I have found it rather interesting, and grounds for speculation, that these plants of the Rio Mizque and Cochabamba lie somewhat in-between the T. bridgesii of Dept. La Paz and the T. scopulicola of Dept. Tarija. I think the answer to the PC lies somewhere in this area. Sad that, according to Trout, the introduction of goats has probably done in wild T. scopulicola.

My last fruit for this season. I really hope next year is as good or better for my success in creating hybrids. :)

Yowie X Peru

This fruit is really quite small. It swelled a couple of days before it split, I assume as we have had a lot of rain lately.

And snails ate the "tail" from the fruit a few weeks ago. Was good of them to leave me the fruit.

Well, a little off topic, but considering my comments above I thought I'd throw in a new picture of the Trichocereus at the Jardin Botanico in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Norma X Anakie

First of the year to split open for me even though it's not the oldest of my fruits.
