Khat (aka Miraa) in Kenya

Recommended Posts

VICE produced a nice video on segment on khat in Kenya in light of the proposed UK ban.

It's a nice summary of the system of trade and the economies that depend on the our favorite cathninone containing shrub. Really nice shots of an international culture which I haven't seen detailed anywhere else except the fairly academic book Kenyan Khat.

Check it out:

as I said before, it's time to ban coffee and beer, in north America and the uk, and Kenya should fund, hops erratication programs.

Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed the video. I love this plant, although I have never chewed it myself, I think it is beautiful!

Thanks for the vid Mira :) was interesting! Never knew khat trees got so big :)

I've chewed it, and chewed it, and chewed it some more, never got more than a strong coffee buzz.

Its a beautiful plant, ive chewed it and grown it. Its not much more than a strong caffeine buzz and in no means should be outlawed. But as with everything moderation is key

Thanks for posting mira I enjoyed it. Yes another case of totally unjustified illegalisation of a plant but funny enough what really struck me was how massive and beautiful were those Khat trees!

Interesting doco man, I <3 VICE.

I wish those pushing these laws would actually go out and experience for themselves the actualities of what they're fighting against, khat seems like a fairly marginal 'drug' from what I've heard (at least physically). I talked recently to a traveler, who said something along the lines of: "In Yemen I once spent the afternoon chewing all the tips off dense a >4m branch, it was over double my height [>6ft], must have been several hundred grams of tips at least. The khat was fresh, it was harvested in front of us, but the effect was not at all any better than a good yerba mate or a strong tea, different only in being far less convenient and user-friendly to consume."
