imo they're biggest commodity trade is tourism.

have you been to ios or Rhodes? The petaluthas are amazing to bestow.

the problem with tourism in Greece is that on the islands the cops take a cut and the owners of beachfront tourism pay no taxes to put back into Elatha.

black(hidden) money in Greece and decades of political corruption have bankrupt the country to a ludicrous level. A level that international experts and bankers will never recuperate.

I moved it because I felt like the general tone of the thread is a bit off. What´s going on in Greece is tragedy that will influence the country for the next 15-25 years and if you want to discuss this, you can certainly do it in Chill Space and I am all for it. But more in a general Thread without linking it directly to Mutant in the title.
I know the postings in this thread were pretty much friendly but if Mutant wants to comment on this, he can do but shouldnt feel compelled to do so. A lot of people come here to relax and get their minds of the everyday problems so let´s keep this discussion a little bit more general.

So how is that any different to the monetary system where banks charge compounding interest on money that never existed & get "consulted" on the drafting of new laws that "govern" them?

In all seriousness compounding interest is directly or indirectly responsible for a goodly portion (probably more than half if one looked closely) of the suffering & misery in the world for centuries.

totally agree shortly.

My point being who the fuck is the imf and why should any one listen to a pack of money merchants dictating to ANY country. I lament the fact that having visited Greece 5 times since i was 4years , the place has noticeably changed for the worse. I've already had a query from a relative who lives in Florina on what the chances are of him coming over here.

Greece is a very very complex enigma. On one hand it has alot going for it but on the other hand i've always thought eventually the rest of Europe and the world will try to effectively squeeze them around the neck until they play ball. The original bailout plan in 2010 was never ever going to work. How can it? Greeks don't play ball and never will. Why should anyone bend over for the imf.

Who the fuck is the imf......and so when a socialist government corrupts itself, these European vultures swoop in, setup guidelines knowing that government -now-is

effectively 'owned'.

On a side note, i cack when ever i see the latest Greek PM(Alexis Tsipras) shooting comments out like"Well why should Greece listen to Germany on these matters.....they owe us big time because of the damage inflicted on us in WW2. *cackling over here.

Imagine being restricted to a princely sum of 60euro a day in atm withdrawals?

The banks have effectively shut shop

I'm not here defending the banks (supposed right) to extricate monies or interest from citizens shortly, i'm deflated at the prospect of another country being held hostage while the imf waits for a ransom so in the meantime people do it tough.

Areas of Athens have no power at different times of the day, basic immunization for children has been removed and the government wants to play chicken with the eurozone.

My real point here is that i think Tsipras is posturing more for the political gain of his own party than actually trying to return Greece to some sort of normality.

Rack of .Olivier Blanchard!!

I'm ranting now , so i'll stop but please know this topic is dear to my heart , so my emotions may cloud my judgement somewhat.. I have much family over there and it pains me to receive bad news from them -lately it's been almost daily.

Oh beautiful Greece what did they do to you or did you do it to yourself?

The first consequences of non payment of the instalment of the IMF is the Greek economy, with the crucial tourism receiving the first blow sector, especially as it begins the most important two months of the summer season.

Tour Operators in the United States known to Greek hoteliers that payments will remit them for tourist accommodation will be bound automatically to the IMF, and against the debt of our country, as denounced in SKAI the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Hoteliers, Yiannis Retsos.

At dawn Wednesday, Greece became the first developed economy to 70eti history of the IMF that are not paid on time debt to the Fund.

Our country is now in phase arrears to the Fund, with debt exceeding 1.5 billion euros.

i don't know if this i true or not, but if it is it means the IMF are vampires. Did you say tourism is a big part of Greek economy? Is the IMF trying to hit them where it hurts most in mob style stand over tactics to get them to play ball?
