Going to Italy and wondering about botanical stuff.

Recommended Posts

So I am going to Parma,Florence and Rome in a couple of weeks and was wondering if there is any must do things.

I was hoping there might be a cacti garden or store up in one of the cities but when I searched I could not understand a thing because it is all in Italian and google did not translate.

I would love to get a few souvenirs from a gardening store or something.

Any suggestion helps :)

Never been there, but there is an Italian cacti forum (should be some info there), you'd have to do a search and

https://translate.google.com/#auto/en/

which I know is not great, but better than nothing

Either way cool trip mate....they like their cacti, but I think more small and floral.

Italy has some great gardening fairs, including cacti specific ones at set times of year, but otherwise its mostly small private nurseries not really open to the public. You might have best luck looking at large diy stores, or small florists, but you have to be really lucky to find one with more interesting stuff.

Dragonfruit.........you should see them in the markets or supermarkets....israel has done a lot of hybridising and reckon they produce the sweetest/tastiest ones (which they export to eu). you may even see some of their cereus fruits (like carmine coloured plums) also good to send home as they are breed to not crack open, label as cereus peruvianus.

If you see any dragonfruit that have orange or yellow coloured skin (rather than red and green), snatched them up (Hybrids, more common in Hawaii)), be sure to throw a few seeds my way :worship: ...........those hybrid seeds you don't grow on yourself will fetch a premium on trade me.

MAF's ok with it ...tho best to post...label seed packet as hylocereus undatus, in case they open the letter.........post is best, airport customs are a real pain.

Their market and restaurants has a variety of wild mushrooms offered.

Lots of cactus nurseries in Italy.. No idea of one in Parm Florence Rome though.

Italians have a thing for gardening and I am sure you will find something... especially rome...
