Has anyone tried putting subs under a blacklight to see if they fluoresce? I saw a tincture made from them that glowed bright blue under blacklight and am wondering if there are betacarbolines present.

Here are my finds whilst in the sweatyness of NNSW..

My first cubensis!

Image092.jpgImage099.jpg

Some mushrooms that grew everywhere around the cubensis which the locals call "toadstools", possibly Amanita?

Image091.jpgImage093.jpg

My first Panaeolus! Are they cyanescens? No bluing was noted..

Considering I wasn't expecting anything before I went I'm more than happy with my finds!

My first cubensis!

shit! are you serious?!?!?!? i've seen them growing around here! i just thought they were another toadstool (because thats pretty much i ever see around here) any blueing noted (i suppose there'd have to be)? what colour did the print come out (if you did one)? ooooh i'm quite excited now, time to go for a little walk.

Hehe.. They seem to grow everywhere up that way :P

Definate blueing, especially looking at the cross-section of the stem.

Didn't do a print but theory says it would be a dark purple.

well i went for that walk this morning (i got out the door yesterday and it started pissing down) and had no luck :(. But that's mainly because absolutely everything is flooded! the only thing i did see was those "toadstools" (Amanita) three posts above (Post #255). i saw about three of them growing on someones front lawn. where am i most likely to find some cubes? like woodchips? eucalypt leaf cover? oh and the ones i thought grew around here turned out to be look-alikes. :BANGHEAD2: any help would be appreciated.

Those white skinny bell headed non bluing things above look like Panaeolus ovatus or similar... should print jet black? I take them as a passable indicator of Pan subs and thassabout it.... people used to think they sent you nuts but I think theyd have some tryptophan going on but litle else of educational value :P Or they could be something more entertaining, those that blue aren't so prone to doing so once they're a few days old and drying, wrinkly etc... but theres usually still the odd blue spot around the rim and anywhere the stem has had wind or rain stress, etc. The big scaley white paddock monster looks like a Macrolepiota... these things have to be the source of more wasted car stops along country back roads than anything else...that and base-up maccas cups (now thats just sick isn't it). Do they smell kind of pissy?

No pics for em, but in the last month or so between between 20 and 80 mins NW of Brisbane I have found the following

Chlorophyllum molybdites

Panaolus ovata

" subbalteatus (limited thus far)

" 'x' , about 4 different kind of

Plenty of those lil white fluffy Conocybes, think theyre peppercaps but havent looked into it.

One (count it) very stunted and grumpy looking goldie.

Plenty of Amanita muscaria var. formosa , usually lurking under Hickory Wattles.

Amanita phalloides

Aseroe rubra (purdy and weird)

Agaricus campestris and agaricus arvensis (more of the former)

A few of those red stinkhorns, and a lesser number of yellow ones... horrible things but you can't help staring.

Couple kinds of Boletus, the usual big meaty brown ones and also some of the wicked green-blue staining ones... I could cut those things into tiny bits for hours just to see em blue.

Shiteloads of those lil "lawn specks"... puffballs, LBM's (mainly Inocybes) of a dozen kinds

Worse still is when you have to drive by a thousand different cow n horsep addocks to get home from anywhere, but you just know the owners are shotty toting fundamentalist incest specialists, etc. Bummer, man.

Hah... I wish I lived out near farms and all... I live near a few small farms but nothing special. Mainly suburbia around here.

Actives are heaps rare to find growing around suburb type areas are they not?

Await replies from others around your area, but AFAIK P. subaeruginosa are found in sydney in the winter. They prefer landscaped gardens, parking lots, police stations etc. ...anywhere there is mulch.

Nice pics alkatrope! There must be thousands in the area at the moment with all that heavy rain - shame about the floods though.... :(

Seriously, anywhere in NNSW or SE QLD at this time of year where cows are lurking will have actives. Suburbia or farmland is irrelevant, as long as there is a cow in a grassed paddock then you have a bloody good chance. Lower lying paddocks near rivers or streams, or higher altitude areas that get more moisture are both excellent bets.

Fellow amateur mycologists in my area should check out Fernvale region esp along riverbanks and paddocks closeby.
