Police seize illegal kava shipments

Police have seized 125kg of illicit kava on the Gove Peninsula despite the NT allowing its first legal shipments of the restricted herb.

Nhulunbuy police seized 65kg from the boot of a car and another 60kg was in unclaimed luggage at Gove Airport.

The soporific Pacific herb was introduced to the Top End as an alternative to alcohol in the 1980s, but was banned in 1997 after concerns about its abuse.
