Recommended Posts

What are these dark spots that are starting to appear in the middle of my seedlings?

Areoles?

Can't see anything in detail with that pic, just a wild guess.

2 questions :)

Are they on every seedling?

Have you grown cacti from seed before?

:)

OK I've put the bigger pic back up.

Yes, it seems to be starting on all the larger ones and this is my first attempt at growing fom seed.

So they're areoles? Cool!

hey strangebrew,

this may seem like a dumb question, but what have you got them growing in? Was it something you bought as is in a bag?

Strange as it sounds, Ive been looking for a good brand of sand for cacti seelings.

Ive experimented with many pre-packaged and home recipie mixes and have been using " Manutec: Propagating Sand" with reasonable success.... But it needs a lot of sifting and washing to remove all the fine salty stuff (ok its probably not salt, but it does seem that way)

Guess Im just looking for a lazy alternative... :D

Oh, and my spin on the dark spots is either aereols or just the seedling developing more chloroplasts therefore more concentrated amounts of chlorophyll

Sorry phil., I can't give you an easy way out.

It's just plain old hand-sieved sand, it didn't really take that long to do with a bucket of water.

It's shiny looking because I just gave the seedlings a spray not long before I took the photo.

Algae has started rearing it's head - some of the sand particles now look green! Can this be controlled in any way?

I found one reference about using Hydrogen Peroxide. Would dripping this carefully onto the algae be OK you think?
