How do you think the COVID19 pandemic will influence societal change, particularly in Australia? 

Surely the western world will re-assess it's dependence on China to produce our medicines at the very least. Or will the lessons that we are confronted with now simply be forgotten and we return to needless consumerism and dependence on cheap imports in the name of a "healthy" global economy?

 

I hope it wakes people up and drives a bit of a reassurance in self sufficient living, supporting small local traders and the like. Of course this kind of living reduces the profitability of big business so there would be more economic stress.

 

Would love to hear some thoughts from you guys, stay safe friends

Yes. But China has already infiltrated every level of government and industry.

 

We need to starve big business of revenue and let them die. Fight the government bailouts.

the world was changing fast even before COVID . but now with the pandemic, it's going to change violently, already has. But noone can tell you about how this is going to evolve... artistic forms of expression are way better ways to see what this change is about.. also highly recommended is the book Homo Sapiens by Harari

There's also the possibility that people will reconsider the benefit of having people attend workplaces to drive desks for 40 hours a week. It's a known fact that people can't concentrate for that long, it's just a burden on people's lives that gives the employer no advantage. Employees working from home will show to employers that it can be done, that it is cheaper, that it's more productive and their people are happier.

 

And let's make our own fridges, cars and medicines again. Heck, I want to buy an Australian made t-shirt again. They used to cost twice as much as the cheap imported shit and last for 10 years.

I'm liking the frugal living. No more work clothes! Can look like a hobo 24/7 it's great. It's been a great incentive to not go out shopping. Stuff we really need can be ordered online. Just making do with what we already have, getting by on that rather than buying more stuff. It's nice having more time for cooking, gardening etc. too.

i'm hoping that a couple of things at least might come out of all this:

1. Society will have a greater awareness of their fellow human beings and a deeper appreciation of how similar we all are.  The virus doesn't discriminate, and nor should we.  Sure it's cliche, but we really are all in this together (Life. Not the virus).

2. Society will live a little more moderately.  Who needs all that useless shit in there lives anyway?  Just buy the stuff you need to get by.
