Oyster contamination :(

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

Unfortunately my first shot at cloning my oyster spawn has failed :(

It seems something must have gotten in going from jar to jar.

The bag of straw substrate is going strong and my jars of King stropharia look healthy and vigorous! :)

For some reason the grain never took off like the KS is

Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers guys!

Hi Moose,

My biggest tip is don't get discouraged. This will happen a lot. I've had times where oysters would contam over and over, even when going straight from the master slant. Just take a moment, review your method and think of where the contam could've come from and how to improve.

As for the take off, depends on a lot of things like your clone method, strain, air circulation, temperature.

I've noticed the jars that have less grain in them do better then the one's that have more. I don't have mine covered with al-foil, just have lids with holes covered with micropore tape. Also they do much better when the temp in the house gets warmer. I don't have any dedicated heating for them yet so they rely on temps in the house, and on cooler days they seem to slow down, so maybe consider putting them into a warmer spot in the house.

Give us an update on how the straw is doing, and also interested in what you are planning for the KS. I'd love to try and grow that in my garden one day too.

Thanks so much! I definitely wont let it discourage me, i've reviewed my methods and will do whatever it takes on my next attempt.

I wasn't too concerned with the speed of growth, definitely found the difference interesting though.

Not too sure why i keep the foil on out of the PC! Guess it's handy to label them :D (The jars have polyfil filters too)

For the KS, i have straw mulch on compost in the back of the garden. Once i had enough spawn going i plan on transferring to that and let them pop up in their own time :)

I now have a colonised bag of straw which the oysters should be popping out of any day now!

I'm more than happy to send you some KS spawn I'm sure i can spare a bit :) I have a successful jar in the fridge i got from a friend.

Comparing the pics to yeast contamination and maybe some kind of cobweb mould?
