Cloning with Aloe Vera gel

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone first time poster here :) long time lurker haha

Was reading up about using Aloe vera gel for rooting cuttings and was wondering if anyone here has had any success using it? It might save me buying more clonex since I have stacks of the stuff growing.

Apparently it contains some rooting hormone called "salicylic acid".

I’ve heard of it being used but haven’t tried it. No harm in having a crack and doing a side by side comparative grow. Lots of theories on cutting aids, honey, saliva etc. I’ve pretty much stopped using hormones for any cuttings as I’ve found as long as it is actively growing when cut, there is no need for it.

Interesting. Apparently also contains auxins and gibberellins, not sure if in useful amounts.

I might do a few tests with a rosemary cutting or something similar. I'll do one dipped in Aloe gel then straight into seedling soil, and another in a glass of water and Aloe gel.

Sorry I never ended up posting the results ahaha I did a rosemary cutting dipped in the gel then straight into soil, and another one dipped and put into a  beer bottle with water.

Only the one in the water grew tiny roots in about 10 days but never grew any longer so I planted it to soil and it died....

I tired again with a passionflower cutting in the water but it hasn't rooted, although it still looks very healthy and it's been well over a month.

Soaking young willow branches in water has worked for me. Contains salicylic acid and such.

Same stuff asprin is made of... i think
