Noob's cacti

Recommended Posts

I started building my cacti garden a mere 3 months ago when I found out you could buy san pedro on ebay.  Apparently I've been living under boulders and not rocks my whole life.  Anyways since then I've read up as much as I could about their cultivation and greatly expanded my collection to everything you can see in the second picture (though I am waiting on more to arrive lol) and have fallen hard for lophs and trichs in particular.  Other cacti are nice but there's just something special to them (other than the obvious) that has bled my wallet dry.  My favourite is trichocereus peruianus "david" from the 4th picture as it is so much more blue than the others though I do have a soft spot for the last two cacti in my pics as they've produced my first ever pups.

I get grief by those that know me for being obsessive, overly excited about each new one I get, etc. so I hope you guys don't mind me sharing with you instead.  From the looks of things though it appears I've found a new online home :)

Beautiful plants and photography

Thanks mate but those pics were terrible.  Photography is an old hobby of mine and those were rushed auto setting shots as I wanted to show a friend without putting much effort in.  Now that I know the pics would be appreciated here though it'll reignite the passion I had to sit down for hours stacking macros and editing pics in general.  It's terrible work but the results truly amazing so I'll show you something special soon enough :)

Thanks mate but don't feel too bad about the size of your garden.  I look at my bank account and weep lol

Thanks Humbolt :)

My hands are cramping from all the work I did in the garden today so sorry for the potato pics but they were the best I could manage and I'm too proud to not share lol

Group shot with some glass gem corn and some of my other ethnos in the background behind them.

One of my peyotes has gone a bit rainbowish.  It's not soft or anything but I'm definitely going to have to keep an eye on it.

I got this beast from a guy online after asking for blue cacti.  It's called Tripsis Peru 'seed grown'.  It's a good 4x fatter than any other cactus I have and blue so naturally I'm in love.

3.thumb.jpg.08620fc50b2d463fab4f36e0ff91abf6.jpg

The last picture from my original post showed a grafted button pupping so here it is again.

Last up is a Peruvianus called John that has a little bit of damage on it.  The desert plants of avalon chick on youtube said tichs get those kinds of scabs because of the alkaloids which has me quite excited for John and the fact he's quite blue doesn't hurt any either :)

I've got about a dozen really nice cacti coming over the next week or two so I'll be sure to take lots of pics as I pot them up.

I feel like Frankenstein and died a little on the inside by absolutely mutilating my girls and piecing them together today.  You lot may be used to grafting  but I feel like a monster over it lol  Anyways here's David, 'Fields' Macrogonus, John and my great shame for the day a TBM that fought the blade.

david.thumb.JPG.21c33e011b706c351ed9ccdac21b6853.JPGfmacro.thumb.JPG.6a30b0267f7bbaf2a63c585667d367db.JPGjohn.thumb.JPG.f0727158083085064dd77e3fd0ecaa92.JPGtbm.thumb.JPG.5ca7759eb872b33f90804808f3764a4f.JPG

I grafted them all to a bunch of quite large pachanoi cuts I had making sure to keep the tips so that I can have more grafting stock in the future.  I also started a blue peru project yesterday which had me planting all my peruvian seed stock.  A good 600+ seeds went in from 8 different strains and hybrids like Rosei#1 x John which is the one I'm most excited about as I have both parents already and really want to see how their genetics play out.  The unmarked blue pots at the bottom of the greenhouse have tons of iboga seeds planted in them and with any luck I wont kill them like I did the iboga plant I bought a while back.  Wish me luck :)

You got the tricho bug hard core, beauty of a collection so far, sometimes it can feel you become a servant to them but they give so much back even just with there looks and presence , I feel there is a real energy to them just walking around looking at them or sitting by them.

A fair few years ago I was spending a bit to much on obtaining clones but now I try refrain from giving in to it cause It is basically never ending and I would be defined financially as poor lol and with a little patience awesome plants will come from seeds, way cheaper and pretty cool seeing them develop, feels very rewarding. I have got well over a thousand going maybe even 2 thousand or more I don't keep count lol, also including coloured flower hybrids, seems cool to get some columns going with different coloured flowers.

Defo gonna tame it down a bit cause its pretty much full scale for me atm  but some seeds I am keen to still get are mostly bridgesii x bridgesii, waiting to see some more of them available like ritta x jeans etc

Rosei1 x john is a nice hybrid I have some that are a couple years old and can see there gonna be super fat attractive beauties : )

The tbm looks a little hacked, make sure your blade is razor sharp (and sterilized) and try to make a clean slice, no hacking or sawing at it unless it is woody as heck and requires some more heavy duty equipment and oomph, not sure about the plastic for the grafts ? I use stocking or super glue, good aeration with stockings : )

Never heard this before, I am not sure of the validity of that claim, sounds dubious to me but I have no idea ?

Anyhow awesome collection and welcome to the tricho club : )

P.S sorry for any errors or stupidity, I am well into a bottle of jd cause I have gone off the rails a bit again lately lol

Thanks mate and you're not wrong, I've definitely caught the bug.  I don't even care that I feel like a slave to them at times because they're such a pleasure just to look at let alone consume.  I too have to calm it down with buying cacti though as it's put me in the poor house.  Thankfully I don't have a missus.  I can't imagine the world of grief I'd get lol

It sounds like you have quite the collection.  1000-2000 plants is no joke.  I hope to get that large, if not more so, in the future.  It's always a number game so you gotta throw down if you want to find greatness.  Speaking of which pics of the Rosei#1 x John or it didn't happen lol  Seriously though I'd love to see some pics if you can be bothered.  It would be fantastic to get a glimpse of what's in store.

I actually used a brand new box cutter to do the grafts today but that TBM had a massive stem in the middle of it that was rock hard which is why it fought back.  I tried my best to only go down on it but the second the blade got stuck on that stem and Iet my grip ease a little the top of the blade went right into the cactus sinking my heart into my toes.  I felt like a right bastard but I did what I could to save it so hopefully it survives.  If not I have more to fall back on.

As for the scab/alkaloid claim I got it from this video

I love that chicks channel.  She claims to not be into consuming the cacti she grows but she's into lophs and trichs like no tomorrow and her partner is an absolute hippy so I call bullshit on that claim of hers but all the same she absolutely loves all of her cacti and succulents which shows every time she talks about them.  Her passion for them keeps me coming back and she puts up  new videos all the time which is great.

Good luck with your home brew/still setup and have a drink for me in the meantime while you're at it :)

Yeh for sure here is a pic of a couple to show the differences within the seed batch, some seed produces near identical plants and other times there is a big variation, that's the beauty of growing from seed ya get to pick and choose : )

Here is a couple that are still young and have a fairly different look from each other r.thumb.jpg.cb378790adc00c3f31745a4e8e23ccb5.jpgrt_(2).thumb.jpg.97de7f08338d4afb6f21a2fd2018e6bc.jpgr_(2).thumb.jpg.ca810152eaa148e3131b908cfdb2a64e.jpgrt.thumb.jpg.598d9c95a1274792c88d4ecdf6de295c.jpg

The pics have been coming out side ways for me lately not sure why sorry about that.

I have some len x sharxx blue about the same age and they are defo showing signs of being big blue basterds and pretty excited to watch them grow, so many hybrids so much goodness.

There is so many but another stand out for me atm is yowie x peru john, there some beauties with distinct deep v notches and plumpness :drool2:

Those cacti sure are pretty.  You can definitely see the influence from both parents in them especially the really dark green rosei#1 colouring which is very promising for the future.  You've got me mega excited to see how mine turn out now :)

Chances are you took those pictures with a phone which uses a corrective orientation tag which will always flip the pictures on you.  What I do to correct that is use irfanview to do a batch conversion of all the pictures I've taken and force the new pictures to have none of the old exif data.  This results in those sideways pictures rotating again by removing the corrective data but once you flip them up the right way they stay up the right way.  You could get the same result in mspaint or whatever image editing app you use by saving the files as a png or whatever to a new location but I find the batch conversion in irfanview handy as it'll smash out as many pics as I want instead of doing it manually one at a time.

Are those Len x Sharxx Blue the only Sharxx hybrid you have going?  I have some seeds of it that have been open pollinated and it crossed with trich. brigesii 'Ben' as well that I've been pretty keen on planting just to get some more blue plants growing.  How blue are yours compared to the rosei#1 x john?  That hybrid of yowie x john sounds pretty good too.  I love those deep distinct notches on my cacti and a bit of plumpness never hurt anyway either.  Speaking of which I may have to break out the psycho0 x john seeds I have.  There's bound to be some similar plants in that stock for sure :)

Thanks for the photo tips, I am quite technologically illiterate.

The only other sharxx x I have is (los banos x palarencis ) x sharxx blue, both hybrids are showing signs of being fairly Glaucus, both are growing in more shade then the rosei1 hybrid tho but yeh looking sweet none the less and pretty sure they shall be stunners.

Those hybrids sound really nice and I hope you're right about the perus x bridgesii's because that's exactly what I'm aiming for :)

I'm going to need a bit of help with my 'Eileen' cactus.  It's started going yellow and is the only one of the cacti to do it.  It also seems to be in a hurry to do so because it didn't look like this at all yesterday and I would have noticed as I check on them a couple of times a day.  Does it need a feed? If so I have some coco based hydroponic nutrients as well as a calcium and magnesium supplement I could give it but if they're no good please let me know what I should do because I will literally cry like a little girl if my baby dies.

That  doesn't look like a nutrient deficiency to me, usually the whole body will go yellow in that case and this one seems splotchy, I am thinking it might have the mosaic virus by the looks of it.

Oh and with ferts I reckon fish emulsion and occasionally a little seasol is good, tho I do not liquid fertilize mine no where near enough, I just lazily put some blood and bone around them and the ones in the ground get a little lime from time to time as well.

Thanks for the quick reply mate :)

I didn't really think it was a nutrient issue as I had recently put them in the larger pots with a tons of new soil with a handful of organic compost mixed in.  Thanks for the nutrient recommendation though, I'll definitely pick some up from bunnings next time I'm down there so I'm ready for them when the time comes.

After spending the last 45 mins or so on google I'm lead to believe it's sun burn as the cactus isn't squishy, leaking fluids or anything.  More than that the damage is 99% on that one side of the plant which gets full sunlight until around midday.  It was fine being so openly exposed but the last 4 days were all very wet and constantly overcast so I think it may have just got hammered by the sun this morning when the weather cleared up.  I'll definitely keep an eye on it and await other replies though because there's a good chance I'm wrong.

It's getting worse.  Now it's starting to shrink and cave in on itself where the yellow bits are and if you compare the previous pic from only a few hours ago you can see how quickly it's changing :(

The circles and rings are telltale viral, often due to nutrient defficencies but not always. Could look into tmv (tobacco mosaic virus/tombavirus) pm me for a facebook group with tons of info if your keen to learn more

Goddamn it, that's the last thing I wanted it to be.  Poor Eileen.  She's now isolated from the rest of the cacti but I'm guessing she's done for :(

I'll take another pic at around 5pm to show the progression of the damage.  If it continues at it's current rate I'll bin her pot and all straight afterwards though as she's now considered a plague victim and all but dead to me.  Thankfully I doubled down and bought two Eileen cuts so I won't lose the genetics but this is absolutely heartbreaking to me as I had become quite attached to that particular plant.  She was everything I wanted in a cactus and truly a beautiful plant that stuck out from the crowd.  I'm going to miss her a lot :(

Theres some info on the group i mentioned about skim milk neutralizing the virus on exterior and in the soil, if you were to keep her you may run the risk of insects transmitting the disease, some however are keeping infected plants and rehabilitating them. Theres debate as to whether many cactus are carriers of the dormant virus and whether nutrient play a part in its activation.

I might have to make a facebook account and join that group.  I don't think I'll keep the infected plant though, it's not really worth the risk of transmission.

Speaking of the alkaloids do you know if it would it even be safe to consume a cactus with such an infection?  Throwing it out seems awfully wasteful compared to drinking her but the idea of doing so feels a bit sketchy to me.

As far as I'm aware its safe, possibly due to the boiling process or maybe its that plant viruses can't affect humans? Defiantly do your research because I'm not informed on the subject

Thanks for being honest and not just saying there's one way to find out.  I'll definitely look into it before deciding to consume it or not.

In the meantime I found a thread on here with similar pictures and others saying it's TMV too.  Looks like @bardo and yourself were right on the money.  Thank you both for all of your help in identifying my issue.

In an hour or so when I take some pics I'll spin her around and really try to document the damage.  It's spreading unbelievably quickly and starting to go around to the uninfected side too.  It's going to be a horror show but if Eileen's going to die at least documenting it may help others in the future.  I may try to fully quarantine her and document her full demise but I'm pretty scared that it's going to spread so time will tell how far I push it.

Here's the pics I said I'd take.  I'm actually shocked that it's essentially stopped it's insane progression.  It's still getting worse but at like 5% of the original speed.  I also found out that TMV isn't an issue to consume so her fate is sealed.  I'll be keeping her alive for another 5 days completely isolated from the rest of the plants and then I'm going to see if she lives up to her reputation.  I'll be sure to take some more pics when she gets the chop.
