Thanks for sharing the experiment, i have never had any issues with mold or rot, i just boil a jug of water and pour it over the medium then sprinkle a thin layer of sand over the surface, place lids on till cool enough to sprinkle the seeds followed by a misting of rain water.

I wish it rained where I live, I keep hearing about how good that stuff is for cacti.

At work we use Potassium Nitrate KNO3 (1% sol) to break dormancy in seeds. I haven't tried it on cacti seeds tho.

 

We soak the seeds for 24h in the KNO3 solution, then tip off the solution and soak in plain tap water for another 24h to fully imbibe the seeds before sowing.

 

Works a treat :)

So in this case is the purpose of the peroxide to increase germination rates or to speed up germination or for molds and bacteria etc. or is it all three ?

Yeh man, it can be a downer when the sky withholds the goods, especially if ya off grid

Older corn seeds have shown an increased germination rate (almost 95%) when germinated in 15% hydrogen peroxide and about a 50% increased germination rate when compared to aerated water germination over a period of 24 hour treatment.

 

Hydrogen peroxide is thought to help break down the seed coat thus speeding germination.

 

H202 also has the advantage of being able to kill or stave off many types of bacteria, mold, etc. So, it would seem to be an advantage to use to help stave off various plant pathogens or competing organisms at the very least while one waits for their seeds to germinate.

19 July 2018.

4 days into experiment first signs of macroscopic mold and fungi present.

4 days First seedlings germinate

 

Any thoughts on how to combat this mold and fungi. One idea... spray with bleach.

 

My thought behind this is that the highly saturated soil will dilute out the bleach after it has had a few moments to kill the fungi and mold.

 

Anyone else tried this or have any suggestions.

Fungus growth removed manually and appears halted today after treatment with 2 new Liters of h202 and light dusting of sulfur.
