Graft of the day

Recommended Posts

Here is another representative of my method of grafting with parafilm. 100% success with the use of parafilm on a 3 day old seedling. This little guy was cut below its cotyledons and only only the top portion was grafted to my Pereskiopsis. The parafilm was removed so you could get a better look, it is best not to remove the parafilm this early however as it can cause your grafts to fail. In fact, it is often best to never remove the parafilm from your graft as your seedlings will have no problem if you leave it in  place and could suffer a complete failure to take should you try to remove it too soon.5b3802a27b49b_cotyledongraft30.thumb.jpg.db27bdc81b149e8c4232709acbb10966.jpgNever leave home without your grafting tape.graftingtapecheck2.thumb.jpg.f3a2cf96912f14d0d6e5676d675f98dc.jpg Also known as parafilm, this one simple tool will save you time, effort, and increase your take rate dramatically with 2-3 day old seedlings as well as 2-3 week old seedlings. For older seedlings...2 cm in diameter.... better to stick with self-adhesive coban.

And update on how the above looks today. And yes, I had to share one last picture of one of my areole grafts attached here as I no longer have any variegated crested areole grafts. They have all been sent to new homes where they can be adored rather than ignored. The scar tissue on the thumb is from one of my first Brugmansia grafts a few decades ago. Like my better grafts... that scar can barely be seen anymore.6dayoldgraftedseedlinggraftedat3daysoldandanareolegraft.thumb.png.60e33e8be95b181ba732c538f75cee07.png

7 July 2018... grafted scion moved to full sun growing the way it is supposed to grow. Did someone put their scions in the shade after they grafted?

What?

Grafts out and suns blazing this is how we do it.

Got my mind on my grafts and my grafts on my mind.

Laid back

Sippin on some long island iced tea

Singing,

And this is how we do it!

I've got 99 problems but a graft ain't one.

Flippin' sweet grafts man :)

Thanks my friend. I post pictures of my grafts with the idea that those that graft already will share their works as well. More importantly however, I hope that those that have never grafted will look at how easy this is and make better grafts themselves to share with us.

I never thought of taking pics when I did my last grafts but I will when I do some more in spring. I'm surprised you're game enough to do it in Winter and I'm glad to see it's working so well for you :) .

That's "Skellum's Vegan Hotdog ®"

Got some melting to it

It came from a pack of bridge seeds (either koehres or uhlig)

DualWieldRake, i don't know what is permitted where you live but i see those dangerous things in the background and have notified the authorities, There should be a knock on your door soon.

You are a criminal and a degenerate who needs your behavior and attitude corrected, you are a danger to our wonderful society and a threat to our children and the peace and security of our people.

Jokes, i don't know but maybe photo shop em out or something ? if it could be an issue ?

It could have been an issue if it was what you think it is, but it's actually a quite similar looking plant Origanum vulgare

They didn't have much of a chance though not beeing a cactus and not getting watered either.

Combine this with the medium they are in (this stuff is light as air...)

Keen eye :P

New Grafts done today... scions are a bit larger..than the lettering on the penny as you can see.

Friday the 13... you know I had to do at least a few graftingpenny2cent.thumb.jpg.6ceb370c079c52054552d18bb53ce502.jpggrafts.

Anyone else make any grafts today?

Thats me!!! and im inspired Inyan.  Awesome. Must be fun too. Once i get some peres im gunna give grafting some seedlings a crack.

This is my 1st ever attempt taken straight after surgery.  3 weeks on patient and host doing ok.

Inyan, do you tape so as to add downward pressure?  I imagine its a delicate job no to overdo it and squash the little fella.  Do you have tape on pics?

I use parafilm... a specific type of grafting tape that I first stretch very thin prior to placing over my seedlings. It is literally as thin as tissue paper when I place it on my seedlings. And while It does provide some needed downward pressure, it also provides the perfect humidity for my grafts to take.

By utilizing parafilm, I am able to water my Pereskiopsis before, during, and after the grafting process to further expedite the healing and subsequent growth of my scion. I have video tutorials for you my

. Send me any grafting videos you might make and I'll give  you some critique if you'd like with the end goal of you grafting at least as well as this poor fool.

If your a plant or cacti nut... grafting to expedite the speed at which you get to see know phenotypes pop out in your garden is indeed like opening Christmas presents in July rather than waiting till Christmas for them to be ready.

Yep, now i get it.  Thanks mate, vids were really helpful. Parafilm is very different to the grafting tape i used (stretch). Does it have pores/ holes when stretched?  I assume things would vary with stock and conditions but how long would you leave it on generally?

Just ebay'd me a couple of rolls, cant wait to get my graft on.
