Documentary Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Burns#Filmography

This bloke does some great docos, in particular - The National Parks: Americas Best Ideas. Great insight to how national parks came to be in America and the people who fought for their creation

Currently watching The Vietnam War series.

What docos is everyone watching and would recommend? Always looking for new stuff to watch

Adam Curtis does some really interesting stuff. I'd recommend The Century of the Self, The Power of Nightmares, All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, Bitter Lake, and Hypernormalisation. They're all more or less about macro-political manipulation or the dangers of technocratic society.

And all the Attenborough docos you can get your hands on.

Downloaded

Power of Nightmares

All Watched Over by Machines

Bitter Lake

Hypernormalisation

Also got

Modern Times: The Way of All Flesh

Seen every Attenborough doco I think he's made. His early stuff is brilliant. A Blank on the Map especially.

Love documentaries.

Of course I love evertything David Attenborough has directed written and most of what he has narrated, which is already material for a lifetime. I love natural history docus and who does it  best than the BBC?

i havent seen a blank on the map, so I guess I should check it out.

especially worthy to see , even if some are older are (these are full series not single episodes)

life on earth (1979)

the living planet (1984)

the trials of life (1990)

the private life of plants (1995) which is a personal favourite and a must for plant lovers

and of course many many more

*****

Changing the subject completely, I often recommend to people to see this amazing multi-epidose BBC documentary about pornography and the porn industry. Again BBC guarantees quality and this is one of the most interesting documentaries I have seen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Side_of_Porn

*****

"This movie is not yet rated"  is a very good documentary on US film classifications and censorship, which shows among other things and pretty nice censorship stories on many different films, how censorship ethics are completely different comparing usa and europe.

****

changing subject again ,I recently became very fascinated with extreme mountaineering stories and accidents of course, since I saw everest (the film)

there are many interesting documentaries on the subjects. some of the most exciting are

the summit (2012) - on the biggest disaster on K2 mountain disaster of 2008

The Dark Side of Everest (2003)

but the film "everest(2015)" is also very accurate to facts.

anyways thats it for now

well, for extreme mountaineering stories, one of my personal favourites would be "touching the void"

when it comes to Ken Burns, he did a 26(?) ep. doco series on the history of American Jazz which I found absolutely fascinating, new appreciation blah, blah. I wish it would pop up on the bay, but no....

That's half the problem with torrents. Either no seeds or it's not uploaded. Don't use them anyway so no issue lol

Just watched Louis Theroux Dark States 3 part series

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09919j2

Louis also does some good stuff

will check out, but I doubt anything surpasses the K2 disaster of 2008

also, if you are interested seriously in music (especially if you play) and music theory, you might wanna check this dude schannel in YT. he is awesome.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnkp4xDOwqqJD7sSM3xdUiQ

his videos are usually short, but have also a documentary feel to it, dude researches a lot, fantastic channel and content. its not jazz exclusive channel, its a open minded musicians channel wet dream thought

I like some of Ross Kemp's doco's. I have to be in the mood for it though.

He goes to some of the most dangerous places on the planet and seeks out the baddest mother fucker he can find to interview and often follows them around for a few days. He puts his life on the line nearly every episode.

One time when he was somewhere in Africa he sought an audience with a local warlord and the warlord was a bit like royalty in some respects. When he got there he asked him some very probing questions that I wouldn't have had the balls to ask.

It turned out that warlords are an official part of the government structure in many of those places, which I didn't know, I always thought of them as bands of rambos like they normally  present them to us here in the west.  The warlords are above the police in many respects and they regulate everything and maintain order.

After I saw that I could put it into context about how some of the African thugs behave when they arrive here. They don't have bands of the warlords henchmen willing to shoot them dead on the spot over here if they step out of line and they just see the police like angry headmistresses waiting to smack them with a ruler if they get caught for anything.

fascinating. kind of begs the question as to where exactly a lot of the wests foreign aid to these governments goes.

Kinda sad.  :(

Doesn't surprise me though. I remember when grindr came about and some of my mates started with it. Still, that scene was always a danger zone.

I guess most people here have checked it out it due to its relevance -but damn for anyone who hasn't seen it, Hamilton Morris' PHARMACOPIA is very good!

Season 1 has been on Viceland on SBS (and is still on catch up below I believe) and Season 2 has almost completely aired in the US and can be streamed through a bunch of different sites (like Putlocker)  https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/program/hamiltons-pharmacopeia

The actors in it are brilliant, Peter skarsgaard did an awesome job. The interviews with the son we're a bit monotonous, I was going to mention it but hate promoting Netflix, but they do have some good docsos.

Also try the blackout experiements that is a bit twisted. If you like psychological docos.

Chef's table if you are a foodie some pretty bizzare chef's on there.

Cartel land about vigilante groups going against the cartels but to have themself infiltrated and corrupted by the government.

Freeway crack in the system, about freeway Rick Ross and the rise of crack.

Just few at the top of my mind that I have watched in the last few weeks.

I saw an episode where he was in the Papuan highlands. It looked volatile as, he did well to keep as calm as he did.

Holy shit. This is completely outside my realm of comprehension.

The British "Up" series, and "Hoop Dreams" are both great. About the way that life doesn't always take the direction you'd expect it to. "The Act of Killing", aside from everything else, makes you wonder about Australia's foreign policy choices and military interventions, and our place in the region more generally.
