MeanGreen Posted October 31, 2017 Hey guys, I have a dilemma. I've been selling Phalaris brachystachys seeds on ebay for a little while and lots of people have been asking to buy rhizomes of my sought after clones (namely AQ-1, Big Medicine, Turkey Red and Yugo Red). Should I go ahead and put some up on ebay, or do you think these genetics should remain in private circles? I believe these genetics should be spread far and wide, but at the same time I highly respect the work of the breeders and the history of trades within the community. I know WorldSeedSupply does sell some YR and BM clones, though. What do you guys think?
Matt1208 Posted October 31, 2017 I wouldn't mind buying a few rhizomes

Anything that has the potential to reduce the instance of people raping trees has to be a good thing in my book.

I'm not sure how the process flows but it looks like the inspection is handled by through another sub dept of the dept of agriculture and goes through a post entry quarantine.(PEQ) I'm not sure if that's under the AQIS banner or not. Here's a link to the relevant webpage. http://agriculture.gov.au/import/goods/plant-products/how-to-import-plants Torsten would know more about this than most of us.
Sallubrious Posted October 31, 2017 @MeanGreen if you ever have any seeds I'm sure you'd get some interest here. I'd be keen myself.
MeanGreen Posted October 31, 2017 They'd probably survive the trip overseas, but they've gotta be somewhere in Oz already, right? Not that I wouldn't send some over, but there's probably an easier way for you guys.
MeanGreen Posted October 31, 2017 (edited) About seeds, yeah I'll definitely make sure to segregate my plants once they flower so I can hand-pollinate them and maybe make some crosses. Not sure if Phalaris is self-pollinating or not. The best species to grow from seed is apparently P. brachystachys though, great profile with mostly dmt, little variation and said to be 2 to 3 times more potent than mimosa (per fresh weight I'm guessing). It grows bigger and taller than P. aquatica and P. arundinacea but it has the disadvantage of not spreading through rhizomes, so you need to propagate it manually through cuttings. Hence it takes longer to get a sizeable amount of material with the same exact genetics at the beginning. I think even self-pollinated seeds from the named clones would give several phenotypes with variations in the alkaloid profile. Mate these plants are pretty important and growing by seed can be a bit of a lottery with toxins, I say if you can help get them out there good on ya.
shonman Posted November 12, 2017 I grew a bunch of brachystachys from seeds, for collectible purposes, and those made more seeds too! then , there was some moisture left in the grass heads, and they started to get fungi. so I washed in bleach and planted them. they sprouted! yay!
MeanGreen Posted November 12, 2017 Well I put some on the bay, thanks for y'alls advice. I got a buyer for all 4 clones already. I'll keep putting auctions up every once in a while I don't wanna flood the market all at once, let them stay rarities. But if any of you guys is in Europe and are interested holla at me here and we'll work something out. Guess I'll post a bit of Phalaris porn for you guys. sagiXsagi Posted December 15, 2017 (edited) this is very funny, as they look simply as grass (one of the worse weeds here) which makes me wonder what kind of Phalaris (or other) species we got growing locally and how easy it would be to play with idenification. I must have missed something over the years, because last time I checked these were not so wanted, due to toxin content. How is this resolved? any cool links are perhaps better than discussing this here Edited December 15, 2017 by sagiXsagi
