Best/Worst Coco Coir brands for bulk substrates?

Recommended Posts

Seems that some brands of coir add trich as a soil conditioner.  This is a bad thing.  Some brands are also more dirty and filled with more random stuff like twigs and rocks and sand, also leading to more contam.

I'd like to create some consensus about what brands you coir people have used, which ones you like best, and why.  Also which ones to stay away from. The only one's I've come across is the brunnings brand, but I'm not sure whether they're any good for bulk substrates.

Is there anything that is high quality, trich free like eco earth available in Australia? Where should I buy from?

Thanks in advance,

Shroomite

Shroomite,
I get my coir from pet stores. Coir thats aimed toward like reptile terrariums & whatnot (pet enclosures) is not treated with trichoderma.
Other bunnings brands have fungicides too... you wanna get the pet terrarium coir mate.

Heres some pix of the product I use:

I get it from a pet store called  'Fins, Fangs & Feathers'
I'm sure you'll find the same brand or other similar products at other pet stores like  'Pet Barn'  etc.

Good luck mate.
May the force be with you.

I know this thread is old but the best blocks of coir I've found are the Richgro brand. The only time I ever had major contams was when I used Brunnings blocks which didn't break apart easily and properly which affected the pasteurisation.

stuy92, I can recommend Professor's Nutrients Coco Premium Pure Blend. I could only find it at Hydro Experts. May be more expensive than Bunnings Brunnings but you see the quality as soon as you open the bag.

I've done plenty of grows with this as the only substrate. Never had trich.

Good luck!

Critters Comfort @ Petbarn is a nice find, rottenjonny.

That's worth an investigation :shroomer:

Hey, just an update.

Richgro doesn't make small bricks of coir any more. However, if you use the bucket tek to pasteurise your coir then I've found that using 4.5 litre of boiled water instead of 4 quarts helps to make sure that the Brunnings coir is less likely to end up with dried, unpasteurised bits that are reluctant to break up. Furthermore, the extra water keeps the temperature higher for longer and your substrate will have plenty of moisture whilst fruiting.
