Sandy slightly alkaline soil, soil should crumble after grabbing a wad & squeezing it into a ball. Too much rain or overwatering is how I lose mine. I find they thrive of being ignored. Grows by itself around old cane farms near the coast.

First attempt to grow this plant, seeds just started sprouting after 2 days, just general potting mix from Bunnings and in about 6 hours of light a dayIMG_0623.JPG

well that night (the night of the last post) I decided to see if another rule could be broken by fertilizing with some weakish tomato feed in not very much water2017-04-10 20.51.53.jpg

so far so good

- oh yeah, all other attempts but this pot have failed during the cotyledon stage

maybe depth of growing medium? i notice the opposite with ephedra after being pointed that way

so why not make sure to have a minimum depth starter pot of 4and a quarter inch / 11cm

for this species

and I know they'll seed in 8inch tall pot from experience (20cm -approx 2litre pot)

so that will be the minimum depth pot I pot these on to ..

I'm thinking an 11litre tricho pot might satisfy them all but perhaps an 18litre might ensure their prospects - all permitting..

Getting their first set of leaves, germination was extremely quick but growth had slowed down for awhile, seems as soon as I put them in more sun growth has sped up again, only watered once since germination which was only 80ml just enough to wet the roots

broke another rule yesterday - i dnno what gave me the courage but it has paid off already it seems with an increased growth spurt overnight - I added chempak#2 'high nitrogen feed' at normal strength, about 40-50ml?

(last dregs from the jug after watering brugmansias)

Decided to pot on since a head count revealed 15 - i couldv'e sworn I planted 16 in there , .. so that got me scared enough to very carefully and gently pot on to a 5litre pot half-filled with my tricho mix and john innes#3 and topped up with john innes#0 (seed one) gradually making the plants sturdy as i built up the soil level - wish me luck eh?

awesome thread

hey you thought ephedras like shallow pot or they dont? what did you mean?

yeah man you showed me ephedra's like a shallow pot but I'm saying the Peganum like a minimum depth early-ish in their development with a view to flowering - I dnno if I'll get away with cramming 15 peganum harmala plantlets in a 5 litre pot for now - so far so good - but may pot on to an 11litre pot

Hmmmm

Ephedra definately likes deep pots, roots tend to go down and deep. BUT, sprouting them in shallow medium might be worth it for a mumber of reasons that have made me love the combo of the shallow sowing trays plus heating mat below ...

most people suggest sowing in deeper pots, I think the shallow ones might help with the early fragile stages of the seedling, as a more shallow pot will dry up faster.. and of course doing it in shallow requires much attention in transplanting, and risks root damage and more stress during transplant...

no idea about peganum though..

yeah sorry I was in a hurry to drop off training shoes to school when i last posted lol ,

I meant for germinating Ephedra re: shallow medium ,

I haven't gotten any further than that stage with Ephedras yet since that hobby was only started a couple of months ago

-other than putting them in the ground as bought established plantlets.. but if they like rockerys as I'm told over here by nurseries I gather they can hack the shallows well?

I'm hoping the Peganum will get a chance to be planted out with the ephedra to bask in raw unfiltered sun+moon shine

(or at least half of them if I decide to continue the indoor challenge)

2017-04-19 14.04.42.jpg

none of the outdoor sowings of Peganum have worked so far btw - maybe something ate the seeds /or seedlings if any ever germinated

just found some pearls of wisdom from Auxin after a goog

""

I had a small bottle of commercial seed stored in a closet for 8 years and they germinated quite well, many of my plants are from those. If they are dried properly and stored in a cool dark place I expect they could last 20 years. Dry them with gentle desiccant, flame seal in a glass ampule, and store at 4°C and I have no doubt they would be viable 100 years later. Its all about storage.

As with most 'weeds' I've found the best germination method is to scratch up some ground, sprinkle seeds on, and water the patch daily.
Ignore what people say about P. harmala hating water and dying if they get wet. They are plants, they need water. The small seedlings will die if left completely dry through a sunny and hot day. My biggest producers are those that get hit by a sprinkler. ""
