I can't decide whether to prune or divert it about a foot and let it keep on going...  I'm not sure the latter is even possible at this late stage.

I'd try to divert it... Can it pass under that roof?

id start trailing it now, pull it towards the roof, and once it gets to a point where it can hold itself against the roof just leave it

Holesaw, or...

I have one of mine on a bamboo rack of sorts, being bent by cable ties that are buffered with strips off a riggers glove.  I think its working..I just tighten the cable ties by a couple of clicks every few days. I can take a pic if you like.

adds vote to re divert ... ummm reason being.... if not flowered yet?

what are the worst winds like there though?

if flowered already, the slicing vote would have a tad more appeal methinketh

its hard to justify holding back such an amazing force hey?

@ micromegas - guessing that, in the hunt for pollinators, they're just checking to see if any bats are nesting ? :)

Seems like you should be able to divert it. I'd measure the gap between it and that wall, then wedge in a piece of lumber slightly larger than the gap (not sure how much longer, maybe test how far you can push it without too much resistance).  Then after giving the cactus time to adjust, wedge in a slightly larger piece of lumber (again I don't know increments of time or length, I'd just be careful not to do too much too fast).  Once the tip is clear of the roof you should be good to go.

Leave it and see what happens. Would suspect it will head towards the light rather than trying to get through the roof, interesting though :)

Ok - y'all convinced me. :)  Thanks for the replies - hope it survives tomorrows predicted high winds.
