Ephedra chilensis

There dont seem to be a lot of info on this chilean species. Synonyms seems to be americana, andina, gracilis. 

 

I found only one picture, I am including it... Some info are in this link

Vernacular name: Pingo-pingo. Ephedra americanaSmall shrubs or suffering, decumbent or sometimes prostrate; Branches opposite or verticillate.Leaves are scaly, often joined at the base forming a sheath around the stem.Dioic or rarely monoecious flowers, in unisex strobiles. Male or female stalks,With 5-7 verticilated bracts more or less connate; Male axillary flowers, perianth dimer, avascular,2-8 concrescent stamens forming a column. Any info on distribution , growing or anything is more than welcome

Ephedra americana BK10504.1 ”Sano-sano”

Ephedraceae. Xerophytic leafless shrub 2–4′ tall. Small red edible fruit a bit more papery than most. Somewhat resembles the Chilean Ephedra breana. Companion plant to Trichocereus bridgesii, Prosopis sp., Puya sp., Oreocereus pseudofossulatus, Corryocactus melanotrichus, etc. Abundant on the shale soil and steep slopes above Huachjilla, La Paz, Bolivia. In some parts of Bolivia it is made into a “coffee” and the herbage is often used for firestarting. Widely regarded urinary tonic and treatment for lung congestion. Z8a/b

Raetch also mentions, in his encyclopedia: 

 

E. americana from ecuador to argentina , peru and high mountains, and also the more prostrate E. rupestris

in one entry and  (pinku pinku)

 

E.andina (=E.amricana var andina from chile  and also E.multiflora  in a second entry - pingo pingo

 

he also mentions E. breana from desert Chile, which seems to be quite different morpholgically.  - pingo pingo 

 

it looks they call all ephedras like that, raetsch says it literally mean "tubes"

 

well, the trip southern bolivia northen argentina and chile now seems even more potentially exciting!
