bardo Posted November 11, 2016 Hey, was hoping someone might be able to help me confirm if this plant is Gahnia aspera or if it is some other type of Gahnia ? I have read that the seeds of aspera are edible and a flour can be made from them, so I am hoping it is indeed aspera. Thank you for any and all help : )
waterboy 2.0 Posted November 11, 2016 looks like a Gahnia spp. to me. Dont have G.aspera in my neck of the wood. of the local Gahnias here the seeds have an oil and a thick outer coat which makes grinding the bastards hard work. Can make cordage out of the foliage, again not the easiest to work with. Makes a good cordage for climbing trees though
bardo Posted November 13, 2016 Cool, thanks for the reply : ) Hoping to get a positive id because if it is aspera I am heaps keen to experiment with it, maybe make some small bread cake things or to add it in with whole meal flour etc to make bread. I might have to investigate further to see if there is many or any look a likes and what some key factors may be in identifying or differentiating from possible non edible types. Any how thanks again for the reply : )
