let it grow !  In time the main column will supply the energy for new pups.  Let the plant develop & grow at its own speed, not something dictated by a human.

well ok, niggles, this is an awesome plant, I give you that, but I said this since you said you 'd lke to propagate it.

if you cut and root the 50 cm upper tip you will have a similar plant in no time, well in a couple years, lets say 2

I no more have such a romanticism about my trichocerei, and they root and grow (=propagate) so easily that its a pity to hold yrself back just because you have one tip. cutting the fattest portion of a columnar tip and rerooting results in a bigger and fatter plant. Just saying.

let me give an example, although scop types might pup a bit more.

If you have a peruvianus, it might take it 2 years to pup and only grow the main column.. If you wan to have 2 or more clones early enough you have to take the courage to cut them.

Of course at the end of the day it depends what one wants, a huge plant or many plant in smaller pots?  does one want to flower his specimen of is mostly interested in veg growth?

PS: I have a couple plants I have said I wont ever cut. One of them is a pretty big TBM, the short form, but its a specimen created from very big and fat cuttings in a big container.. To start such a plant you need to cut the fattest cutting you can get, and not just a segment. Anyways, to create this huge TBM with fatty segments I have cut the biggest fattest tips of 2 previous plants. and now in this particular plant, two of the biggest branches of penises have make a couple pretty fat aerial roots, so they beg me to cut them. I only haven't dones this yet because I had said to myself, "hey, this penis is gonna be left uncut" and maybe I hope it could flower for me.

BUT cutting them 2 huge and already rooted cuttings, I could create 2 more large specimens in couple of years, even in smaller pots...
