Is it mere coincidence that 420 follows on from bicycle day? I think not.

Alcohol is overwhelmingly the most common drug problem treated in Australia, but amphetamines are gaining ground as increasing numbers of users get specialist support, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report released on Wednesday.

https://www.smh.com.au/healthcare/the-number-one-drug-addiction-driving-australians-into-treatment-20190416-p51er1.html

Time for a walk down memory lane then, back when drugs didn't kill you. Wish there was a drug like that still around...

In your lifetime, fo sho:

https://independentaustralia.net/politics/politics-display/act-cannabis-bill-delayed-but-not-out,12592

The A.C.T. Cannabis Bill that was originally expected to pass in February this year has been referred to the Health Committee who are now conducting a formal inquiry into the Bill and all aspects of the proposed legislation.

As a result of the referral to the committee, the legislation has been delayed till at least mid-year, unlikely to pass any sooner than the July 2019 sitting period now.

There are a few more players (in both camps) creating undercurrents in this process than we see in the media . Still, the momentum is picking up and this will happen a lot sooner than we all would have guessed a short time ago.

Australia's bullshit medical cannabis access getting you down? Try the 'Thailand Twist'. All the cool kids are doin it:

https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/the-thailand-twist-how-a-wa-man-believes-he-can-secure-legal-medical-cannabis-year-round-20190418-p51fgc.html

West Australian man Jim Plamondon claims to have found a loophole to legally import medicinal cannabis into Australia.

The former Busselton resident said he used the Therapeutic Goods Administration Traveller's Exemption to bypass Australian bureaucracy, and claims to be the first Australian to have succeeded at the feat.

The evolution of Cannabis from a demon drug destroying lives, to a valuable medicine to a possible future stalwart performer in the economy. If it takes something like those in power to realize they can profit substantially more from legalization than prohibition in order to remove the stigma and dispel untruths associated with Cannabis, then perhaps this is a good thing. I still have reservations that it is essentially greed driving the changes, but this ride is gaining speed. Time will tell.

If it's acceptable for the government to take over from the "criminal element" and make the $$$, then this is one area in need of work....

A little closer to home....., C'mon Oz, we can't let NZ beat us at this. Where's our sense of healthy competition (pun intended) and national pride?

I hesitate to call this ‘progress’, but our probable future Health Minister has finally had something to say about medical Cannabis:

https://www.change.org/p/decriminalise-the-use-of-medicinal-cannabis-for-people-with-terminal-cancer-like-my-son/responses/42198

Deeply centrist, and possibly will be derailed by the TGA’s recalcitrance and uncooperative Senators. Nice to see it on the agenda though.

Richard DiNatale doesn’t rub everyone the right way, but he gets why the TGA is problematic:

I'd like to think that sometime in the future common sense like this will prevail in the Australian medical paradigm:

https://hightimes.com/news/colorado-governor-reviewing-bill-let-doctors-suggest-cannabis-instead-opioids/

Governor Jared Polis is currently reading over Senate Bill 19-013, which would add any condition that would typically lead to a opioids prescription to the list of medical marijuana qualifiers.

“This is going to be a pretty big deal for acute pain for athletes, and also for kids who have surgeries.” said the bill’s co-sponsor Edie Hooton. Advocates for the legislation see it as a panacea for the opioid addiction epidemic, which resulted in 578 overdose deaths in the state in 2017, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-05-23/study-casts-doubt-on-roadside-cannabis-testing/11104544

The accuracy of drug driving tests has been called into question after a landmark court ruling and new research by a leading academic.

Data collected by Sydney University has revealed roadside mobile saliva tests returned inaccurate results more than 20 per cent of the time when testing oral fluids for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Researchers at the university's Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics conducted hundreds of tests on drivers with varying levels of THC in their system to study whether there was any link between cannabis and driver impairment.

OK, so there’s to be an inquiry about cannabis in Victoria. (How many has it been now?)

https://fionapatten.com.au/news/secured-victorias-first-inquiry-cannabis/

Even though details aren’t up yet, I’ve been told they will be taking submissions.

Now, while I trust that Fiona Patten’s heart is in the right place with this as she’s serious about legalisation, there are likely to be a lot of bullshit reefer madness/drugs r bad m’kay contributions. So when the time comes, it will be important to try to balance that with something reasonable.

Will post more info as I hear it.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/06/20/france-urged-government-experts-legalise-cannabis-take-back/

--- In their report released on Thursday entitled “Cannabis: how to take back control”, the two CEA-mandated economists wrote: “The system of prohibition promised by France for the past 50 years has been a failure. ”State-controlled cannabis stores would be the best way to control drug trafficking and “restrict access” to younger would-be users, they argued.

"By their calculations, cannabis could bring up to €2.8 billion (£2.5bn) per year into state coffers and create up to 57,000 jobs."---

So really, it's about the $$. Are we heading in the right direction for the wrong reasons. And if we are, what will be the consequences?

^ One good thing about capitalism I guess. It can get stuff done. I think in that circumstance as long as the average person can benefit from it, by being able to create a business it’s a good thing.

It’ll be a bad thing if you need expensive licenses that only big business can afford...
