How to root extra-small cuttings

Recommended Posts

I've recently come to own a cutting of a Bridgesii that is about as large as a cherry. I would very much like for this plant to live on its own roots before I try any crazy grafting to propagate it. So far, I have it in some damp Perlite that I hope will stimulate rooting without introducing too much chance of rot.

Have any of you successfully rooted a cutting this small? Should I be looking to graft it, or parts of it, right away, rather than trying to root it?

I've found tiny pups I've discarded root after a long time so it is possible, to increase chances keep warm and dry out of direct sun.

Grafting will speed things up a great deal, even.if you root it it will take and eon to grow ;-)

I'm relatively inexperienced with grafting scions of this size, so maybe I'll keep this one frosty in the propagator while I experiment with some more established small plants.

Here's one (t.pachanoi)I found when retrieving some pots yesterday... I would have taken this off a root stock a year ago.. Or more.

I'm always impressed when i see this, a tiny piece of plant surviving like that!

That looks only a little smaller than what I've got now.

If you were going to save that pup, what would you do?

I will let this grow as is now that it is growing roots, and in a few years I will use for grafting root stock if all goes well. Ordinarily I would graft something like that if I was trying to keep it..

Grafting is super easy, especially with things this size. give it a crack ;-)

I'm sold on trying to graft, then. What size stock would you imagine for that pup if you were to graft it? My prejudice is to put it on a T. Pachanoi but I have a lot more pereskiopsis and selenicereus then pach at the moment, and so more opportunities to screw up some similar-sized scions that I've got.

Pachanoi would be better but look into impale grafting re pereskiopsis, you can cut the pere back like a spear to exspose vascular core and make a concave cut in the scion

Not quite as impressive as doublebenno's, and it is looking a bit sad.... but those are roots.
