ok i swapped positions of the 2 asian red mangrove strapped to the branch decor... with one red mangrove..

the asian reds have gone in pots , I guess I did already know that it was only the usual red mangrove that can grow attached to stuff without being in the "ground"/pots...

one white mangrove from 20 explains why they come in packs of 20

anyhoo,  updated growth pics:

a few more update pics during a refill after a water change ,

a few bruguiera losses from drowning (silly experiment that was eh?)

the palms don't appear to drown so easily though :3 (they're very very buoyant)

Repotted some but not all of the Bruguira sexangula and gymnorrhiziaP1000110.JPGP1000109.JPG

and the remaining Nypa fruticansP1000108.JPGP1000107.JPGin DIY riparium pots .. and a mix of old and fresh zeolite with handfuls of sand from the substrate.

The remaining Rhizophora mangleP1000145.JPGP1000135.JPG seems to be doing well , maybe it out competed the others to death?

maybe they constricted in the bogwood holes? , not this last one tho...

.. so the Mangroves are getting bigger now :)

well in august my good ole faithful powerhead that had been going pretty much non stop for the last 15 or so years decided to give up the ghost ... so replaced with a juwel ecco that decided the mangroves were just too much competition and gave up it's ghost early .. wtf?

.. and i had to switch off the heaters due to no pull through their enclosure within the filter housing..

so seeing as I've been pining for an eheim pro thermo since the pro ii was out and never being able to afford one for myself before I figured it was time to get that eheim pro 3 thermo I had hankered after last ..

and would gladly slice that juwel filter out for more room in the aquarium ...

So, what a nice surprise that the eheim pro 4 350 thermo has come out just in time to snaffle the last one at the store/site ..

and with a vision 180 in tow , it's minimum tank rating is 180litre and I reckon if I upgraded tank I wouldn't go bigger than a vision 260 just down to maneuverability so i think that's a filter for life there.. and maybe on to fit another plec or 2?

:D !  I'll bet those fishies will be quite pleased about that filter too.

http://www.aqua-pond24.de/out/pictures/generated/product/1/665_665_75/sol_eheim_professionel4_thermo_2373_1.jpg

https://www.eheim.com/en_GB/node/6250

so figured I'd order another 9 diy riparium pots and see if I can prep for retrying the white mangroves and if I ever get any luck with the black or greys .., at least provisions will be in place.

maybe it's time for an overhaul on the scape ... cork wood keeps falling apart and there must be better woods and rocks out there..

Aww thanks man I'm glad it floats your boat and I'm also very happy and glad to share the fun and have somewhere like-minded to share it and with having a bad memory for some things despite it being almost photographic with others; somewhere to bank the info for reference and nostalgia :3 .

'gotta admit I love tinkering with aquatics since trying to create a natural mobile for my kids to watch from newborn

and some interesting byproducts like, i dunno , using the water to feed the plant hobbies? having established filter to seed new ones?, even re-colonising my neighbours lawn with the good bacteria to re-green their grass where their dog kept pissing lol , borrowing cuttings from for other projects, .. and aquaria has been some of the greatest accidentally discovered trip-toys I experienced yet ..

toads are coming close though in their early days, soon dart frogs and milk frogs should enhance that factor too I hope which are mainly intended to be pets for my youngest son (dart frogs) and my daughter (amazon milk frogs)... but there might end up being a snake enclosure for her at some point too and may take on the milk frogs myself instead.

'hopefully I can make a great Axolotl world for my eldest son or show him the minerals again and see what he comes up with himself..

maybe every room should have a terrarium/vivarium/riparium/aquarium/palaudarium/creature feature, in every house ..

in every part of the world , maybe even built into spaceships :)

wow this arrived very farst .. today at ... carstle horskull :) , so farst that it almost broke my ribs and face receiving it ..

P1000313.JPG

and was really easy to setup ..

1. two plastic bags (of media) {opened up and contents poured into filter media trays} removed,

2. flick a switch

3. add both ends of a pipe

4. cut them in the middle

5. attach spray bar to outlet and intake to inlet and position them in the tank

6. flick the same switch back again

7. pump a button loads to prime until a certain water level reached

8. switch on filter until full and returning water to aquarium

9. flick heater on and set temp ... fkn baddasss piece of kit !

10. do away with 2 heaters, 2 powerheads and make a total saving of 2 plug sockets

- even managed to fit it in a vision 180 cabinet (one of my biggest worries since 2008 for an eheim external)!! :o

did have to take the door off and it was the tightest squeeze ever to put it back on after the filter was slidden in snugly with microns either side only.

P1000317.JPGP1000319.JPGP1000318.JPG

don't you just love it when your first ever external is the absolute cream and a piece of mother fucking deliciously German technology :) to cream over almost as much as the kinds of fishies it will healthenize

(dictionary needed a new word today).

*biig long slow and passionate kiss [with tongues] to the soil in a random yard of some Deutsch-land* hnnfr! :o mmm B) thank you so much rawrz..

Finally finished re-potting mangroves .. 'tried to leave a little root exposed in case it encourages "walking" roots

're-scaped a bit wider looking and to the new current flow ..

blue plec seems to love it enough to not be bothered about being photographedP1000525.JPG

and so I may have procured 4 pals for him/her .. need names ...

.. and a bunch of pleco breeding caves for another long planned: Project L128 Blue phantom

which might mean scrapping aquasoil re-scaping plans ..

added the first er.. bmw cave to arrive and another piece of tree this arvo

P1000598.JPGP1000611.JPG

and figured it might be nice to get five L260 "Queen arabesque" ᖀlecos

1.jpg

and a bunch more pro single caves each for them and each L128 "blue phantom" ᖀlec'tards.. might even be able to fit another slate structure cave in on the right ..

-edit- scratch that - 'cept the caves for 'ole blueys ..

..time for a long pined after ultimate ᖀleco dream to be had tonight of diving straight into El Rio Xingu and meeting some .. might as well eh? :P

so figured it might be nice to get a couple of L046 Hypancistrus zebra :3 ..

So I've decided to turn Mangrovia into a soup of pleco spunk , eggs and reproduction of late .. maybe the mangroves like to eat a bit of spunk now and then with their fish piss eh? .. and egg shell :) with their fish shit ?

looks like babies were on those previously laid down cards, .. baby L046 zebra plecos :3

can you spot the zebra fry in this pic ? *clue* = wood in hell is that little varmint?

P1000765.JPG

^^these 2>>P1000851.JPG look smaller than the ones that came with dad in the bagP1000692.JPG..

maybe they were with mum in the cave?

maybe there are 4 juveniles/fry? .. maybe the glass bow front and water are bending the view too much to be able to know until seeing a third and fourth at the same time or significantly larger than this ..

Isn't it nice to watch males of other critters be badass at raising their kids too :) ..

I wonder if shamans in the amazon view through the pleco's eyes as well as the jaguar's?

Weird ... these juveniles aren't L046 Hypancistrus zebra .. but they still hang around near the L046 Male ..

They must know/sense he's the 'ardest one in the tank..

They're L450 Hypancistrus sp' :) Can't beat source knowledge eh?

hmmm , looks like BMW don't actually make pleco caves so judging by the deathtrap it's gap directly above the 2 cave cavities turns out to be I gather it must be a wearing a mask called counterfeit.. so 2 catfish down ... : /

..on the brighter side there might be more blue plecs arriving today along with single pro/non deathtrap caves :)

and someone to give a couple of mangroves to .. or more.. to try in one of their pleco tanks and hopefully the mangrovial path can find some other walkers interest and happiness over the years.

better pic once dust settled

P1010057.JPG

:/ 2 upside-downies that have died were my long time pals .. maybe 7 yrs .. and overlooking the potential danger of the slate breeding structure was a boo-boo for sure ... as good as they look , and they really do ..

fuck that for a game of soldiers.. maybe the ants outside can make a good exo skelebob to keep at least some of them with me .. so long as a bird or cat doesn't make off with it .. last pleco exoskeleton I had blew off a roof in a wind and became wire haired labradork food ...

anyhow .. I wonder what the other 4 upside down catfish are thinking after that.

I wonder if one thinks "mmmm all this rooom that fat bastard was hiding from me" or "no way where's my fkn sister you prick?" or "bit more food today? .. strange..."

or if the mangroves are like "who took my dinner away?"

I wonder if the mangroves start walking ... if the plecos will prefer to breed among their roots?

at least the caves I got from one of the coolest people I met in a long time today should mitigate any further complications..  and hopefully project pleco will fill in the long wait for mangroves to do much ..

maybe they need more light? or a hole cut out the plastic so they can benefit more from the lights already there..

just it would mean a permanent fixture and deciding upon a final sighting for said lights...

or maybe buy another big one and wire them to one main safely and in a tidy fashion/manner?
