Seed storage - desiccant?

Recommended Posts

I've used desiccant to store pollen, and it works fine in the fridge / freezer. Can i use desiccant for seed storage? Or can it damage the seeds? Can the seeds be to dry or can to much desiccant suck goodness out of the embryo? Probably a noob question but I am curious?

Cheers

I really don't know, so this would be an amateur opinion.

I think these silica bags might such the humidity for the seeds survival?

It varies from one species to another. Some love quite strong desiccation, some dont, some cant be dried at all (recalcitrant).

As a general rule, desert species are fine with silica desiccation.

Useful information can often be found in the Kew Seed Information Database, including seed storage potential at different humidity/moisture/temperature levels.
