Auction: HUGE grafted loph!

Auction: HUGE grafted loph!

I'm auctioning off a HUGE grafted L. Williamsi for a friend. This is something truly special and certainly not something you see every day.

The graft was performed approximately five years ago and the whole plant is in exceptionally good health. The grafted section flowers prolifically for months at a time and produces an abundance of seeds (although note that no one to my knowledge has attempted to germinate the seeds).

Looking down from above, the grafted section has a circumference of 61cm (!) and a diameter of 21cm. From the top of the pot to the top of the grafted section, the height of the entire plant is 29cm. It has 13 large "primary" heads, and many smaller buttons.

As you can see from the images below, there is no insect damage or significant scarring. It has never had any problems with rot, sunburn or other tissue damage. The T. Pachanoi that it is grafted on is planted in premium cactus soil and the whole plant has been kept under a veranda. Care has been taken to ensure that the grafted section stayed dry at all times. The plant has been receiving approximately 4 hours of direct sun each day, from early to late morning.

The reserve price is $200.

Due to the value of this item and the amount of time and effort that it will take to prepare it for postage, I will not be accepting bids less than the reserve price.

How the auction works:
The auction is open now and will close at 8.00pm Australian Eastern Standard Time on Sunday 13 December, 2015. Please ensure that that you are referring to the correct timezone when placing bids to avoid the disspaointment of placing a bid after the item has sold. Place bids by posting your bid as a reply to this post below. I will contact the highest bidder by PM shortly after the auction ends to arrange payment and postage. On either the Monday or the Tuesday directly after payment is received, I will go to the house where the cactus is located, prepare it for postage and send it off.

Note that I will be donating 10% of the auction price to Erowid to help support the valuable work that they do :)

Payment and postage:
Payment is via PayPal only. Postage ONLY to locations within Australia. Due to the value of this item, I recommend that the plant be sent as-is, and not bare-rooted. This means that the postage cost will likely be at least $30-40 and possibly more. Buyer must cover the cost of postage. The plant is going to be given a week without any water to allow the soil to become dry, which will reduce the weight of the item and thus reduce postage costs. I will bear the cost of any materials I need for packaging the plant. I have a reputation for taking great care in packaging cactus cuttings and the way I will prepare this plant will be my finest work yet, which will probably take me several hours. Rest assured that I will take extreme care to ensure that the plant is very well protected from damage during transit.

Disclaimer:
Please note that I'm selling this as a collectors item and I do not encourage or endorse any attempt to prepare any part of this plant for ingestion.

Haha, if there's a worm in the soil and you want to snort it up your nose, I stand by my position of neither encouraging nor endorsing this action :P

Very nice indeed !!

Just wondering tho why the stock has a lot of cuts where the spines were. Is that because pups were removed and more energy goes to the scion?

mate, if you look closely at the cuts you can see in the center the dead give away of pup removal as there is vascular tissues exposed. if that makes sense.

a good idea that I have introduced to my more recent grafts is to remove all the aeroles before doing the graft (expecially those close to soil and under soil as these can be really hard to remove and you need to let the plant callous, so, no water for some time... not ideal)

I don't know of anyone else that does this but I will post a pick of an example in the "werts garden be it infested with rats" thread.

be happy.

$333.00

keep it comming people. fucksake!

Cheers wert. I usually just pull the pups off if they start showing. Interesting is your idea about aeroles removal. I'll check out ur thread.

Very happy ;)

Now back to the scheduled auction.

Without going off topic too much (these issues would be best left for a new thread and have probably been discussed before in other threads), I also usually just remove pups as they come - I figured that if you remove all of them right at the start you end up with a bit less green energy-producing tissue on the root stock and more scar tissue, which can be a bit more vulnerable to infection. Really though I don't think it makes much difference either way. With age the root stock tends to produce less pups, and I'm pretty sure this plant hasn't sent out a T. Pachanoi pup for at least a year, possibly two years. One suggestion the owner made is that you could cut the pachanoi root stock about half-way up, let it thoroughly callous over and then replant it so that only the grafted section is visible above the soil / gravel / whatever. This could improve the aesthetic for people for those who care about that and would make for an incredibly impressive and more natural looking specimen. However, this plant is very impressive either way and I personally would be scared to risk doing anything that might disrupt it's growth or make it vulnerable to infection! Finally, I'll also add just in case anyone is wondering, that none of the loph buttons have been removed, only pups from the root stock. Anyway, back to the auction! So far the highest bid is $333 :)

Just to clarify, because the auction ends at 8.00pm Australian Eastern Standard time, if there are multiple bids right at the end the winning bid will be the highest bid placed before or at 7.59 AEST. Any bid that is placed at or after 8.00pm AEST will not be valid.

Thanks FancyPants :)

Ridiculously stoked hey!

I was doing a one off night shift so I actually set my bid, went to work and completely forgot about it.. It wasn't until around 11pm while I was having a cup of tea that I remembered. Thought someone else would have bagged it for sure.

After my first flush of fruits I'll do a seed giveaway :)

Thanks again Sir Jeans!
