Germinating Caapi

Recommended Posts

Nice one OP and nice seedlings everyone... Wow strange seed shape, beautiful wings...

One awesome member of sab sent me 3 types of caapi seeds and a few alicia seeds. Have never sawn this in the past.. I love vines, the're propably amongst my favourite groups of plants, beside cacti.. I have grown Ipomoea tricolor , Argyreia & Turbina in the past and all have been very rewarding experiences.

OP's notes scared me a bit.
So what I understood so far.

1. seeds are sown 3-6 mm delow the substrate [ I suppose depending also on seed size? ] and the wing upwards.

2. seeds would be better sown in sanitised substrate because they might take long to sprout (= fear of seed rot)

So I guess my questions are...

a) How long could a caapi/alicia seed take to sprout? F.e. chilli pepper sprout usually from 7 ~ 14 days, sometimes more.. up to a month..

b ) what temperatures should I ideally try to have? I am not at all sure about myself and indoor attempts, but since its winter here, I could try to make in inside.. would a 15-30 C temperature fluctuation be too much?

c) doesn't the seed like/need saoking or filing (thining out the seed exterior) ? Has somebody tried this?

PS: d) I am thinking of using jiffy pellets to sprout at least some of them.. is it a good idea? or I would better go with potting soil and perlite through microwave?

e) I am thinking of buying a small greenhouse with its own fluoro lamp, seems awesome for cactus sowing too. I suppose ventilation would play a major part in sprouting instead of rotting the seeds..

PS2: Is a 'samara' a seed with a wing, or a totaly different seed type? I notice alicia seed has 2 (or 4) wings...

expecting alicia to take aaaaages myself ... but I only ever got alicia seeds from world seed supply ..

this little strip of nothing having sprouted in the aya tank yet; are all from WSS

the only 3 (of 5) that have sprouted are peruvian yellow caapi...

nuthn yet on the skyblue 'possible new species'(10), nor on the white aya(5) ,alicia(5)or muricata(5) ..

, I dnno if its that they've travelled twice that causes them to take longer to germinate (once travelling to wss , then again to me -as opposed to direct from source-) that has perhaps caused some sort of dormancy ? - or perhaps their storage method maybe?...

or just if it's simply that they naturally take a few months..

-or if they just take that long anyway from the particular source plants offspring...

Maybe there's a better way, for them specifically, to discover?

but the rest are from STS caapi giveaway (ourinhos, tuncunaca and caupuri) and i guess are super fkn fresh azz

The best way I found to germinate caapi is to plant it seal it and forget about it and check every once in a while.

mine dry out if i dont check them every day ....since the last week or 2...

they are often needing a spray (every 2 days) but every off day I just squeegie the humidity to replicate the water cycle and thus am replacing what is lost ~+ a little bit ( the extra bit they need as they grow) ...

and i blow air at them to toughen the stems too a few times a day

Always a pleasure matey :)

i hope you can flower them over there and share the seeds further in some way ... and spread the caapi love :)

and will be nice to know how they manage/like your climate ..

i hope the cuttings make good too .. and will be good to see them do well for you , good luck!

why not come join us at sts too and thank Eirn and Roze? - it's they who really made it happen for us

and world seed supply just stopped shipping aya seeds from their ebay which sucks..

and the difference in germination rates is phenominal..

I just added something for my batch to climb for a few that looked like they were feeling around for something to climb

Here's my remaining seedlings from a week ago, sitting below my main caapi plant which has gone nuts this year. I've traded away 7 of them and this is what's left. Also 2 Alicia Anisopetala seedlings on the left.

Hello caapi dedicated folks!

I'm so glad that I found you and may share thoughts about my difficulty.

I've sowed six different types of caapi species on Feb. the 2nd 2016. All together were bought from WSS seller. There is no one seed germinated to this current date. It kills me slowly :(

I see that propagation conditions were/are identical as I saw them in your great pictures today guys. What yet my caapis need to sprout?

And if this time I'm fully unsuccessful of it and my wallet now is free of enough money for a long period of time (to buy seeds in the Fall time again) are here folks which might help me get new fresh and viable seeds for free or not expensive?

Thank you.

my understanding is that you may well have to wait as long as six months or more depending upon the age/condition of the Caapi seeds that you start with sometimes even longer so be patient and see what pops up for you. Patience is a big part of all of this.

Sorry to hear about that mate. They give away caapi seeds for free over on Sharetheseeds and they sprouted in 3 weeks for me at almost 100 percent. Alicia takes alot longer in my experience, like almost 3 months.

Conv3rgence, a couple of days before I've registered here I had read this topic fully and tried to find that folks there at Sharetheseeds. May I ask you help me to know exact members' nicknames which I could ask for seeds? Or a thread name where to ask about, where yours request was written. And I yet will wait for my A. anisopetala. Thank you.
