bogfrog Posted August 27, 2015 Thought it be time for another garden grow log.. I have since moved homes and now live in a little oasis. Today the sun was shining brightly so I got sowing cacti seeds and tending some of the plants. This is the beginning. I'll post here as the garden slowly develops, still have many plants hibernating with friends and family, but since I feel like I have my gardener-self coming back into season, I'll start here. Planted some: Macrogonus OP from Ethy Macrogunus OP (secret garden) from Olive Sausage OP (secret garden) from Olive Goliath OP (secret garden) from Olive Macrogonus x Juuls from Thunderhorse Validus x Peruvianus from Thunderhorse Roseii #1 OP from Ethy Validus (alpine garden society) from Thunderhorse. Then sat the trays out on the table to get a good initial sun-burst: Watered bonsai, got this one at the front for my birthday, been bringing it out during the day for fresh air and sun and inside in the evenings, seems happy enough but I'm being careful as was told they are sensitive. Can't remember the botanical name ..might be a ficus. Think it is. The other one is some very hardy kind of conifer: Added more worm castings to the vege tray at the back, watered what was already out here and then titoou'd about moving some of the braver indoor plants out into the world. The conifer in green ceramic pot is a Tsuga, then there's a clymacen, trichodaemeia, pedro, candicans, haworthia, crassulla 'Fawlty Towers' from CC, and what I'm pretty sure is an acacia maidenii...and bulbs and kale and silver beet chilling at the far right. Then added sedum crest, some juuls x peruvianus in 4 singular black pots at left, a macrogonus in circular geen pot in middle, then some huarazensis x puquiensis from nitrogen in the two black 6 packs, then newly repotted variegated pachanoi crest. Then some of the indoor stuff My 1st graft bottom left corner, ariocarpus retusus in centre bottom, two ariocarpus fissuratus in pot together, in small bonsai dish in right bottom corner is 4 ariocarpus types, fissuratus, kotschoubeyanus, kotschoubeyanus v. Elephantidens, ariocarpus hybrid..can't remember what. Further back on the left are some more nitrogen seedlings waiting to be repotted, ayacucho x huarazensis and behind them puquiensis x scopulicola. Behind that is 4 op bridgesii 'alko' and next to them is a TPM x TPQC from nitrogen on a pere. Midrange there's a grafted aztekium ritterii, ariocarpus brovanus on pere, singular will, then tucked over in the far left corner is a pelecephora aselliaformis and a teeny tin TPM x TPQC crest and some kanna cuttings. Will show my crests tomorrow they are mealy-bugged atm.. Oh the shame. Will hop to it now. Thanks for looking, happy spring preparations to all

DeadStar Posted August 27, 2015 (edited) OP open pollinated. Kind of like a springer episode. You know one of the parents but the other is open for discussion Thanks for sharing bogfrog. I love the ficus and the veiw is breath taking Edited August 27, 2015 by DeadStar

Getafix Posted August 27, 2015 Hey Bogfrog, Looks great. Guessing that's not Dunedin anymore.... Did you manage to retain any of your Trich collection you used to have? Getafix
bogfrog Posted August 27, 2015 Thanks all! And hey Getafix, believe it or not it is! And yeah still have 3/4s of my plants at my friends and my mums houses, cause I've been slow on the uptake this year and until recently circumstances haven't been appropriate for having 30-50ish spikey as heck trichs around. Once I get a free weekend with vehicle access then some things gonna change around here. I am trying to decide if I should get another greenhouse or not..
Amazonian Posted August 27, 2015 I'm more excited about the location / scenery than i am about the plants...Seriously bogfrog, that looks like an awesome place to be living. The house looks great too. I bet it all has a really nice feeling to it. I will be following this thread, cause i do like the plants also, lol. bogfrog Posted August 27, 2015 Thanks buddy. It really is wonderful. Couldn't believe my luck and still barely can. I've been being extra extra nice to my landlady and tending the hens, ducks and geese and working in the vege garden with hopes she'll let me stay on long term. Wait till you guys see the worm farms..omg. Never seen anything like it. I have so much worm castings its ridiculous. Beautiful house and property, with a pretty colourful history. It has fallen to neglect a little over the last 15 years or so. Guess that's why I'm here. Put a bit of new energy into the place, get it lively again. And so very lively it is..

bogfrog Posted September 9, 2015 Round 2.. Nitrogen Crests have been repotted and to some extent debugged, Still battling with a bit of mealy.. Best super mealy destruction technique advice appreciated! I used to always just sqiush em but because they are in crest crevices that approach is quite time consuming and ineffective TPC x multi Psycho0 x TPM TPM x N1 (bad bugs ) TPQC x TPM Unknown lost id..gahh TPM x SS01 Some Cuzco and TBMs Peruvianus to the left, Cuzco at the back, bridgesii at the front Uhhmm that nz tricho we've tried to id for years with confusing results, prob a Cuzco, to the left. Coromandel cacti's 'Super Spiny' behind to the right. This guy...forgot where it came from and what it is but I love it Newly sown trichocereus seeds (listed in first post) are just beginning life, under watchful eye of clay mother Some are a bit slow. The SG sausage were waay ahead of the pack, germination in about 3 days with those I recently got gifted some pere by two awesome peeps I have traded with in the past. Incredible to be able to restock a pere farm just like that thanks to the generosity of others. Blew me away. And oh boy.. Generosity...! Dawnbeaver sent me heaps of fat pere and these two beauties!! Couldn't believe my eyes..so happeey Ariocarpus retusus zone And I've started repotting a few trichocereus, the potting medium they are in looks all used up so I will have to upsize the pots of everything gradually. Adding a bit of Suscon Green to the mix to combat root mealy where it shows itself. Hopefully can keep on top of it. Here's a bridgesii grafted onto a Yowie and another TBM form, very slow growing.. That's all from me for the moment. I'll report back with future developments
Strontium Dawg Posted September 9, 2015 Hey bog, You could try something like this for the mealies. http://greenharvest.com.au/PestControlOrganic/GeneralPurposeSprayProducts.html#Natrasoap
bogfrog Posted September 9, 2015 Awesome! Looks perfect. I have been told mealy bug are water resistant though, I wonder if this will effectively stick to them. I think water just runs off them and doesn't soak into the fluff. I first treated the crests by dabbing meths on the mealy bugs with a small paintbrush and then washing them and keeping them out of the sun in the days afterward. I thought this would have killed them for sure but a week later I see they are just carrying on like nothing happened...? I will get some natrasoap and try it anyway as it looks good and sounds like it works for mites aswell..I've got the odd few of those too. Thanks!
Strontium Dawg Posted September 9, 2015 Well, it's worth a try anyway. I've never used it as I've never had to deal with mealies on my cacti so far...(fingers crossed).
Kykeion Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) I am trying to decide if I should get another greenhouse or not.. Of course you should! If you have to ask then the answer is yes. Your place looks pretty awesome! As far as mealies I have had ok success with rubbing alcohol and physical removal with a hose or sink sprayer. The challenge is that inevitably I miss a few and they eventually repopulate. I also think they hangout in the soil making them harder to get to. There is a horticultural oil that I had success with (don't recall name/brand) on my hoyas, however you cant use it on cacti or succulents, and even with the hoyas I had to be careful to not burn the leaves. Kykeion Posted September 9, 2015 Hmm.. You may want to test the Natrasoap on a small area of a few plants first. Came across this when I was looking up the product. http://forum.auscactiforum.net/t520-natrasoap-be-careful Looks like is has caused black weeping rot for some people. bogfrog Posted March 20, 2016 A lil update... Gardens been displaced once more except this time I have moved islands! Have brought some stuff with me but the major focus this year was raising stuff from seed with my plant-loving bf. We have produced around 700 seedlings this season (...*gulp*) and I've been working on the pereskiopsis grafts, got up to about the 70~80 mark now (yay for pere) Haven't taken photos of everything yet but this will give a glimpse! Some sharxx blue x TPM grafts My first row of graduates (from the moisture chamber) ..these lil guys were gifted some jasper topping stones to mark their progression into the real world of sunlight and inconsistent humidity. And this ain't my plant but dang, I have gotten to know it very well taking around 100 clones from it in the last few months... This is not something you see everyday!!! Or in my case - ever before! Pere in bloom today Crests are going nicely.. ... Bog is still winning at life And a final LOL @ this guy... bridgesii 'Anna' x Roseii 1
