Visceral420 Posted June 27, 2015 Hey guys. So I recently got a whole heap of Psychotria berries in an awesome trade. You know who you are Thankyou! So I was wondering how people save these seeds? I have read that their germination rates can be pretty terrible. I'm assuming that means they don't have a great shelf life?Any help or info muchly appreciated! Strontium Dawg Posted June 27, 2015 I think you probably want to get them started as soon as you can. But if not, at least rub the seeds out of the berries.
Visceral420 Posted June 27, 2015 Yeah I plan on starting some up asap but I got way more than I want to start atm. Have removed some from the berries
LokStok Posted June 27, 2015 yeah, as above, with this genus, the best way to save seeds is to sow them straight away, turn them into plants that then produce flowers, which in turn produce fresh seeds. if you really have to store them, then ive heard that is helps to actually leave them inside the dried berries. (could be wrong with this, dont have any concrete back-up to support at the mo)
theuserformallyknownasd00d Posted June 27, 2015 (edited) Maybe give the berries a rinse in bleach then store in fresh spaghnum moss. Might even be worth dampening the moss and microwaving it in a bag first Edited June 27, 2015 by theuserformallyknownasd00d
Strontium Dawg Posted June 27, 2015 The berries are prone to mould in my experience, but yeah, maybe bleach or peroxide would stop that.
Visceral420 Posted June 27, 2015 Thanx for the tips guys!
Zaka Posted June 27, 2015 Irie, Treat them like coffee. I would clean and dry them off then store in fairly dry spagnum....otherwise they might sprout. They may take six months to sprout anyways..... Respect, Z
tarenna Posted June 28, 2015 ^^ Exactly - if you plant them all now you will have at least a few months to wait for germination to begin. Full germination might take up to a year or so.
Visceral420 Posted July 2, 2015 Cleaned and dried half my berries and put them in sphagnum moss.Other half I removed the seeds, cleaned and soaked them overnight and then planted today. Now I wait....
zelly Posted July 3, 2015 But if not, at least rub the seeds out of the berries. NO ! ( i see I'm too late) If kept inside the berries AND stored in the refrigerator, I've kept viridis seeds viable for 3-4 months, even after the berries turned to mush Once removed from the berries, the seeds dry out quickly
