Question about Spores and the respiratory system

Recommended Posts

Ive been doing a bit of research into growing mushrooms to eat and for medicinal purposes

I have a child that has respiratory issues and gets really bad athsma regularly that he has to take a lot of prescribed medication for during flare ups. I read that small doses of Reishi can benifit the respiratory system and ease athsma attacks.

My question is. With the mistakes i am bound to make. Would introducing millions more spores to the household air counteract the benefits to the respiratory system that the Reishi is know for.

I would hate to make his athsma worse because i want to start a new hobby

Depends on a lot of things, but Id dare say likely.

If reishi runs through to its full spore potential it generates a lot.

Oysters are worse though.

Its probably better to play on the safe side and look for a different hobby.

I will continue to just buy edibles and do a bit more reading. I never knew that mushrooms had so many medicinal benefits.

Yes it is a concern,

i know of workers at mushrooms farms who develop allergies to mushrooms because of the exposure to spores. and i would assume if you were asthmatic it may cause issues. it would really depend on the concentration of spores in the air, as we are all breathing in spores and particulate matter all the time. but yes reishi and oysters are heavy spoulators.

i have recently developed issues with hay fever / small air borne particles. so i am also concerned about my hobby. i am currently not growing anything due to crazy ass life issues and lack of time. and am concerned about starting up again.

In thinking about it you can do outdoor grows. depends on the type and size of your property.

After 2 seasons growing edibles inside, I also now have permanent hay fever issues. Several ENT specialists and lost of swabbing later I've just been told I'm bacteria sensitive. Not to mention all the composting and repotting I've been doing the last 2yrs also. Now I just use a respirator when potting or cleaning mould. Still I'm blocked up 24/7!

I might look into this a bit and keep the spore explosions outside. I think i have the perfect spot for some shiitaki logs in the back yard

Nearly 10 years ago, after hobby farming I developed a fungal infection in my ear! I've often wondered if there was a link.

So recently when I dabbled again and began to get itchy ears I went heavy on the old Aqua Ear (its IPA and glacial Acetic acid for swimmers ear). The downside is it really dries out the skin.
