Daemonsol Posted May 12, 2015 Howdy everybody (and free floating consciousnesses)! Check this out! These two cacti started putting out all these offshoots not long before my mongrel dog knocked them off there mother plant - I let them callous and potted them about a month back. The offshoots have kept growing even though I'm not sure the main plants have rooted very well as they're starting to look pretty thirsty, drawing on the main columns reserves. I cut the etiolated main tips off both to try and encourage root growth, however I'm starting to get a little worried about them cause despite frequent watering (I have a REALLY well draining soil mix) and occasional night misting these babies aren't plumping up... Do I have to cut off the offshoots to save these? Some of them look like cool little mutants so I was really hoping to grow them to a decent size before cutting them off and rooting them... ace1928 Posted May 12, 2015 Did you hit that plant with any hormones or anything before the offshoots started going nuts like that?Be real careful overwatering new cuts too. Sometimes they are just damn slow, especially when the weather is getting cooler.
Daemonsol Posted May 12, 2015 Might have overwatered the plants with a new fert I found "gogo juice" ;-)

zed240 Posted May 12, 2015 (edited) I don't know much about it but it looks very similar to pictures people put up and say is a result of a plant virus called "witches broom". Might be worth looking that up. Also, if it is that I think it can also affect other plants and be transferred so you may want to quarantine this plant so your others don't get affected. [EDIT] - I've used gogo juice on my trichs and have never had a plant do this. Edited May 12, 2015 by zed240

zelly Posted May 12, 2015 Do I have to cut off the offshoots to save these? imho, yes. cut the offsets off, root em or graft em. otherwise they'll just suck the main stems dry before they can re root.
