Acorus Americanus / 'calamus, sweet flag'

Recommended Posts

I found a nice patch of the American calamus growing, dug up some roots and live plants.....

Read a bit about it.

Rumour has it that removing oils......takes out unpleasant aspects of chewing this plant...

then, by cold water extraction, some suspect a hitherto ignored phelethylamine type compound (legal) is present in the water....

Any thoughts or experiences on this?

hey shonman,

not much from my own experience, but thought I'd share this:

www.rook.org/earl/bwca/nature/aquatics/acorus.html

that has some information & makes the distinction as you did between americanus versus calamus, the former evidently lower in B-Asarone...

I was a big fan of taking little bumps of powdered calamus up the nose there for a little while. Takes a little while (like a week or two) before anything starts happening, some sort of weird reverse tolerance thing. Love this plant! I have a bag somewhere, I'll do some more experiments here in a bit and get back to you. I would like to do an ethanol extract on some and see where it gets me.
