Idon'tstudydinosaurs Posted January 21, 2015 I did these grafts in April 2013. I have attached original and current photots to show the difference. I just feel that they haven't grown at the rate I thought they would. They don't get watered over winter and in summer I use seaweed extract every couple of weeks during summer. The shorter one has had some vertical growth but the overall diameter of it hasn't dramatically increased. The taller one hasn't really had substantial growth for the time period. Anything different I should be doing? Different fertilizer? repot? Cheers.
Rabelais Posted January 21, 2015 I have a couple of grafts with similar slow growth rates. I just assumed that sometimes my graft connections just aren't that great. It may be fully attached and strong, but it just doesn't grow that fast compared to some others grafted at the same time.
Dreamwalker. Posted January 21, 2015 that's slow.....I water my trichs every 2nd day during the warm seasons..diluted.liquid manure of blood & bone every week or 2....
Idon'tstudydinosaurs Posted January 21, 2015 Will up my watering and fert. Regime. Cheers.
zelly Posted January 21, 2015 if you want fast growth rates, stick with pereskiopsis as the rootstock. fast growth can lead to split heads....
hostilis Posted January 21, 2015 (edited) I've had certain grafts that just don't want to grow very well. I believe it's like Rabelais said, sometimes the vascular connection isn't very good. Most of my grafts with T. pachanoi as the stock grow pretty damn fast. So i don't think it's the stock that is the problem. Unless it's unhealthy or stressed or something. Does they try shooting pups constantly? In my experience the grafts with shitty connections constantly try to shoot pups while the grafts with great connections only try in the beginning a few times and then avert all energy to the scion. If the stock isn't shooting pups and the scion isn't really growing I would guess that the entire plant is unhealthy. Idon'tstudydinosaurs Posted January 21, 2015 No pups from the scions, however the rootstock shoots one out every now and then. I will up my feed/water slightly and see if it makes a difference.
hostilis Posted January 21, 2015 (edited) I was talking the stock shooting pups. And honestly I wouldn't up the feeding/watering if it's not really growing. But that's just my opinion. Maybe it will help? Do they get a lot of light? Edited January 21, 2015 by hostilis
Idon'tstudydinosaurs Posted January 21, 2015 They get about 8 hours full sun in the summer. Maybe I will try connect the vascular cambium better next time I do a graft.

Dreamwalker. Posted January 21, 2015 the plants are from April 2013,,,, thats a while now....they look like they lack water...even splitting as above might be better than the very slow growth...I have yet to have a split like that...exploding cacti...cool....I still feel extra water might be the solution...1/2 cup of water allow to dry, then water again...till the climate cools below 20c.....you should see growth within 3 weeks.... I push my plants during the warm season, its extraordinary how much growth they can put on...but be sure to cease water, when the climate cools...& bring inside if prone to frost's......& don't use nitrogen rich fert. that said most members here have more experience than me..........but I don't see what you have to lose....really those lophs should be pupping like crazy....
Idon'tstudydinosaurs Posted January 21, 2015 Cheers everyone. Instead of using the seaweed extract I will try watering with a mild hydroponic solution. Searching through the forum I can see that I have possibly underwatered and under fed them. Once every couple of weeks over sumer is clearly not enough. hostilis Posted January 21, 2015 I water all my trichs once every other week in the summer and they do great. And it's super hot and dry in my climate.
_Cursive Posted January 21, 2015 - Have you changed your potting mix within the last 3 years?- If not, that will be why. Bare root it and wash the roots. I notice that if the cacti are lacking in good nutritious growing medium, they will stall.- If you have changed the growing medium, take the pot and stand it in warm water for a few hours to allow it to get maximum water absorption.- Fertilize with a low Nitrogen based fertilizer. Seaweed is high in N.
