Yawning Man Posted December 13, 2014 Trying to germinate but have had no success. I think it might be dud seed or possibly not warm enough?
Gimli Posted December 13, 2014 Trying to germinate but have had no success. I think it might be dud seed or possibly not warm enough? I use a heat mat + rockwool as the grow medium. Can get heat mat from reptile pet store, rockwool from hydroponics store. I just put some Cayenne seeds into rockwool cubes, so hopefully get sprouts in 3-5 days. Yawning Man Posted December 13, 2014 Yeah I've heard of starting chillies in winter. Gives them a head start for the fruiting season for a larger yield. How long should it take for a chilli seed to germ?
bullit Posted December 13, 2014 (edited) I start my seedlings indoor during winter. I use the heat mat for other stuff too. yeah cool , they are easy to get going if the seeds are fresh . sprinkle in the bed and water they will germ around 2 to 4 weeks. i grow loads of chillis butch t, nanagom, fiesta, bell, all the habs, 4 different trinidads, variegated, 4 different birds eyes and load more i will get sum pics up soon Edited December 13, 2014 by bullit
Berengar Posted December 13, 2014 C. chinense varieties can take up to a month to germinate. I prefer to put the seeds into a moist paper towel and in a bag, then put it somewhere warm, back of the fridge or something, and forget about them for a while. Trying to germinate them in soil or coir inevitabely means they will get devoured by gnat larvae.
Phoenix_Osiris Posted December 13, 2014 nice pics Gimli I grow black cuban, corno di ti rosso, bigjim, Thai prik sod dang, butch T, red jalapeno and aji panca. I was pretty lucky with my seeds they all germinated within a week. Most took just 3-4 days. I just put in mini greenhouse. Growth has been slow since germination :-/. ∂an Posted December 14, 2014 out of about 8 chocolate habanero seeds a sowed in september, only 2 came up. this is one of them: I planted the seeds in one of those multi-site mini green houses. might have been a bit too cold for them, a heat mat is not a bad idea. Gimli Posted December 14, 2014 I use a few of these: http://www.bunnings.com.au/saxon-mini-green-house-with-seed-tray_p2960182 http://www.hydroponicsolutions.com.au/shop/grodan-rockwool-propagation-cubes-40x40mm

Strontium Dawg Posted December 17, 2014 I use jiffy pellets and pretty much always have good results. I've heard people doing an acidic water soak first to stimulate germination. Warmth will get them going. I had to cut back on my chilli cultivation to make room for other botanicals, I got a bit carried away for a few years, and there's only so many kilos of pods you can eat in a year when they're all over 600000 scovilles!

Gimli Posted December 17, 2014 (edited) Glaukus: do you have any seeds you may want to sell? That Rastafari scorpion looks cool! What sort of chocolate pepper is that? ghost? Edited December 17, 2014 by Gimli
Strontium Dawg Posted December 17, 2014 The choco is a habanero, it's probably my favourite. Ripping heat and such a great flavour. I'm a bit low on seeds at the moment, I have bhut seeds, but sounds like you have them already. Many of my seeds got all mixed up so I'm not really sure what's what until they grow out and fruit... waterboy 2.0 Posted December 17, 2014 scaled back this year on chillis, always use a heat mat to get them to germ well down this way though. Otherwise its erratic or no go before they rot. Only got some lemon drops going that I really wanted to try, thanks to old mate bulli I've stopped growing the real hot fckrs because I got sick of getting caught out when I went for a piss....lol

Berengar Posted December 18, 2014 Imagine if you wear contact lenses and you assume 5+ washes and 24 hours between cleaning habaneros and scorpions and putting them on is enough!! Definitely the mistake you learn from the first time! Or if you're like me, stop wearing contacts after the fifth similar incident...
